Crookston Pirate Girls golfer, Dani Boyle (a Junior), shot a 97 for a two round total of 187 to finish in a tie for 52nd place at the Minnesota State High School League State Class AA Girls Golf tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek golf course near Jordan. The top individual golfer was Sophia Youmens of Red Wing with a six under par 138. Red Wing also won the team title with a 646, one stroke better than Minnewaska Area/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.
Dani teed off at the 10th hole to start the round. She started with four double bogey’s in a row and had 24 strokes through the first four. “It was a tough start,” said Coach Perreault. “It wasn’t the start she wanted and had a lot of three-putts.” Dani settled in and loosened up a little bit and decided to just have fun and go after it. Starting on the 14th hole she had a par, followed by a bogey, par, bogey and finished the back nine with a bogey on the 18th hole and turned in a 47 (11 over par) through the first nine holes. “She managed to get things back to her normal,” said Coach Perreault. “She kept playing and tried to loosen up and that seemed to help.”
Walking the 5,000-plus yard course for the third straight day seemed to take a toll on Boyle as she started to run out of gas. She went 10 over par on hole 10th through 13th holes. “If you play smart it isn’t that tough, but if you go for it, it becomes a lot harder,” said Boyle. Coach Perreault said Dani didn’t get a break. “She never had the ball bounce her way so the last nine ate her up a little bit, which was too bad.” Once again she started to settle down and took a more relaxed attitude once again and was four over par on the final five holes, including a par on the final hole. “I knew I wasn’t going to be able to come back from where I was so I quit being down on myself and just played. It was a good experience and it was nice to finish with one of my few pars, so that was good.”
Boyle wraps up the Pirate Girls Golf season and Coach Perreault said it was a great experience for his junior golfer. “I am proud of Dani because it is a physically and mentally demanding course,” said Coach Perreault. “She got better by being here and hopefully she will take it and work on getting better and make a return trip next year.”
