CROOKSTON’S ETHAN BOLL IN THE SEMI’S, ETHAN BOWMAN 1 WIN AWAY FROM PLACING AT RUMBLE ON THE RED

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team competed in the Rumble on the Red Tournament held at the Fargo Dome in Fargo, N.D. The tournament runs 18 mats at once, with 74 teams competing.  Crookston is in 35th place after the first day of wrestling, which is impressive when they only have four wrestlers in the varsity portion of the tournament.  The Pirates have eight wrestlers competing in the J.V. portion of the tournament. “It was a tough decision for some of the guys to wrestle varsity or Junior Varsity,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. “We put the younger guys in the J.V. tournament so they could get six to eight, or nine matches instead of two on the varsity.  It was a tough decision, but hopefully, the guys have some success and get a lot of wrestling in over the two days.”

Two of the four Pirate wrestlers in the varsity tournament are still alive.  Ethan Boll received the #2 seed at 195-pounds and received a first-round bye. In the second round, Boll beat Antonio Menard of Lakeville North by a 12-4 major decision.  In the quarter-finals, Boll was dominant with a pin in the second period over William Freking of Jackson County Central at 2:55.  Boll advances to the semi-finals where he will wrestle Isaiah Huus of Bismarck, North Dakota on Thursday.

Ethan Bowman had a good start to the day and had to wrestle in the pre-lims and beat Beat Carl Tjernlund (Kulm, ND) by pin in the second period.  He kept it rolling with a first-round victory over Kellen Hoornaert of West Fargo Sheyenne by an 11-3 major decision at 152-pounds. Bowman lost a heart-breaker in the second round to Nicholas Anderson of West Fargo 7-6.  In the wrestlebacks, Bowman beat Will Olson of Mahnomen-Waubun 8-0 to stay alive.  In the second wrestle-back match, Ethan beat Hank Tellers of United North Central by pin at 2:47 to advance.  Bowman will wrestle Ashton Lipinski of Sartell-St. Stephen on Thursday morning.  If Bowman wins he would assure himself a top-eight finish.  If he loses, he would be eliminated, so it is a big match in the morning.

Carter Coauette wrestled at 145-pounds and had a great start to the tournament with a 6-2 victory over Logan Granroth of St. Francis.  Coauette dominated the match for the entire six minutes.  In the second round, Coauette ran into a very good opponent when he lost to Colton Bornholdt of New Prague 10-2.  In the wrestlebacks, Carter lost to Isaac Felchie by pin in 93-seconds and was eliminated.

Hunter Knutson was the fourth Pirate to wrestle varsity and lost his first match of the day to Ciete Scherer of Delano (Coach by Crookston High School alum Jeff Olson) by pin in 57-seconds.  In the wrestlebacks, Hunter went the full six minutes, but lost 9-2 and was eliminated.

In the Junior Varsity tournament, the Pirates still have five of the nine wrestlers alive and wrestling on Thursday.
Evin Trudeau, Gavin Hlucny, Casey Weiland, Braxton Volker, and Spencer Ness are still alive and will wrestle on Thursday.  All the Pirate results are below.
