CROOKTON SCHOOLS SEE SLIGHT DECLINE IN ENROLLMENT, BUT BIG INCREASE IN PRESCHOOL

KROX collected the enrollment numbers for the Crookston Public School District, Cathedral Elementary School, as well as for Our Savior’s Lutheran School for the first week of school at each of the buildings for 2022.

The Crookston School District has begun the year with an enrollment of 1,070 students, which is a decrease of 36 students over last school year.  The good news for the district, they budgeted for fewer students than they had so financially they will be in decent shape.  More good news is the preschool enrollment is 108 students.  That is the biggest group since they offered it and although the district doesn’t get funding for preschool, it is a good sign for future enrollment.

Our Saviors Lutheran School offers Preschool through sixth grade, and they have 51 which is a decrease of five students from last year.

Cathedral School offers Preschool through sixth grade, and they have a total of 75, which is a decrease of 4 students from last year.

Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Dave Kuehn said the enrollment is steady from last year. “I think just based on the people around me that maybe know a little more of the enrollment history, I think it’s an average year. I think we’re stable and I think what we thought was coming in and what we predicted is what has come through our doors,” said Kuehn who also explained the large Freshman number. “Students have what’s called a high-school transcript and based on where they’re at in that transcript, our new High School Principal, Matt Torgerson felt that it was a better way to track students through their high school career. So, it doesn’t necessarily mean we have 124 age-level 9th-graders but we at this point have some students that probably have some credits that they’re needing to recover that are maybe sophomores and juniors that are still maybe sitting at a 9th-grade transcript level.  Again, it’s a concern but it’s something we’re addressing within our buildings. We have the opportunity to work with those students and help them to do some things with credit recovery so, they’re still a part of our 9-12 enrollment numbers, it just makes it look a little different than what people are normally seeing.”
