The Crookston Youth Basketball Association (CYBA) recently wrapped up its first-ever Mini Hoopers Intro to Basketball Academy, a five-week program to introduce the fundamentals of basketball to the community’s youngest future athletes. From September 3 to October 4, the Saturday morning sessions welcomed 4-6-year-olds for a fun, engaging introduction to basketball.
The academy focused on teaching basic skills, building confidence, and, most importantly, sparking a love for the game in a supportive, team-oriented environment. The Mini Hoopers program is part of CYBA’s broader commitment to growing basketball in Crookston, starting with the youngest age group and building a strong foundation for future players.
CYBA currently offers basketball opportunities for boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade and continues to be a staple in the community’s youth sports scene. “This program was all about getting kids involved early and creating a positive first experience with the sport,” said Erik Griffin, Mini Hoopers Coordinator. “We’re proud of how it went and grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.”
The success of the Mini Hoopers academy wouldn’t have been possible without the help of dedicated local volunteers. A special thank you goes out to all volunteers who stepped up to help us run a successful program. The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams also showed up in a big way to assist with coaching and mentoring the kids. Their presence and enthusiasm made a lasting impact, and CYBA is grateful to have such an engaged college program right here in town. As CYBA looks ahead to the rest of its K–8 programming, the organization remains committed to creating more opportunities like Mini Hoopers where community, teamwork, and a love for the game come first.
