The Downtown Crookston Development Partnership is excited to announce the 2026 Adopt a Hanging Flower Basket program.
This year, will feature new, more sustainable baskets along with flowers locally grown by University of Minnesota Crookston Horticulture students. “Last year we ran into some weather troubles. Lots of wind, storms, lots of sun, some dryness. And you just never know what you’re going to get with our lovely Minnesota season,” said DCDP’s Jess Bengston. “We got some new sustainable baskets that will require less watering because they have a nice reservoir at the bottom, so that’ll help us in our efforts and maintenance over the season.”
UMC has been a big help for this year’s program. “We’ll be keeping a really close eye on them this year, especially since we have the new baskets and new varieties of flowers and the students from UMC that are helping with that,” said Bengston. “Teresa Helgeson has been a really good consultant for us, so it’s been a really fun ride getting ready for this 2026 program.”
You can adopt a basket in honor or in memory of a loved one for the upcoming growing season. Baskets are available for $50 each, or two for $90. “That includes the flowers, the materials, the maintenance, and the watering,” said Bengston. “It can be in honor or in memorial of a loved one or just to simply show community pride.” To adopt a basket, email downtowncrookston@gmail.com or call 218-280-2854. As far as downtown corner planters go, they will be open for adoption this season, though the adopter is solely responsible for all watering and maintenance. “People are able to adopt those again this year, but they will have to be maintained and watered by whoever adopts them,” said Bengston. “We’ve had some regular people who have adopted those. So if any are open, reach out to us. We’ll let you know. We’re hoping to fill those again at least for this summer, and who knows what will happen after the street project. We might get some new cool things going on downtown.”
