Rep. Debra Kiel, R-Crookston, earned the GOP endorsement for House District 01B on at an endorsing convention. Kiel was unanimously endorsed by GOP delegates.
“I am grateful and appreciate the support from delegates during Tuesday’s endorsing convention,” Rep. Kiel said. “During these challenging times, I am committed to upholding the state constitution as we help Northwest Minnesota recover from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 outbreak.”
Kiel is currently serving her fifth term in the Minnesota House of Representatives and was first elected in 2010. She serves on the following committees and divisions:
- Health and Human Services Policy
- Agriculture and Food Finance and Policy Division
- Health and Human Services Finance Division
- Long-Term Care Division
- State Government Finance Division
- Ethics
In addition to serving as a state representative, Kiel is a farmer and homemaker. She and her husband, Lonn, live on a farm south of Crookston.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

STAY AT HOME ENDS, RESTRICTIONS REMAIN
The governor announced this week that he has renewed his peacetime emergency powers and will lift the Stay at Home order beginning Monday, May 18, leaving in place some restrictions.
I am glad to see we’re taking steps in the right direction, and that many of our businesses will be allowed to safely open soon. I know that many of our local churches, restaurants, and gyms will have a very hard time surviving until June 1, however. I hope the governor will reconsider making them wait that long, especially considering many of them already have safety plans in place already.
SCHOOLS MAY IMPLEMENT SUMMER SCHOOL HYBRID MODEL
The governor also announced this week that schools will be allowed the option to offer summer learning through a hybrid model of distance learning and in-school learning, or to continue distance learning.
The executive order offers schools flexibility for some in-person instruction if schools are in compliance with Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) guidelines on masking, social distancing, personal hygiene, screening, and cleaning, and adhere to MDH’s guidance for summer programs.
