The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) of Minnesota donated a $1,000 award to the local Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary (DAVA) Unit 14 to be awarded to someone both in need and worthy of the award. The local unit chose to honor David Carlson.
David Carlson has lived in Crookston his entire life, graduating from high school in 1965, and recently moving into assisted living due to his health. He served in Korea as a member of the Army’s 2nd Infantry. He was assigned to Chicago during the 1968 riots in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
Carlson worked as a grain hauler for Harvey Boucher for many years, and also hauled oil for Jacobson Transport. He has volunteered many hours at the Polk County Museum and has been a member of the American Legion for 53 years, serving on the board for many of those years. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Carlson was in charge of the Honor Guard for the Veterans Council for the funerals of local veterans and helped to set up many of the Memorial Day Services held in the community.
The award was presented to Carlson by DAVA Unit 14 President Jean LaJesse, Adjutant Margee Keller, and DAV Chapter 14 member Jack Hanson on April 17 at Heroes Rise Coffee Company.
