The candidates running for Crookston City Council in Ward 4 are Don Cavalier and Sharon Lewis. We asked each candidate to introduce themselves and why they are running.
Q: Would you please tell us about yourself?
Don: I’m retired right now. I just retired three years ago from the University of Minnesota Crookston [after] 40 years of work out there. Before that, I had worked at the corrections center and was a high school/middle school counselor and an elementary teacher in Crookston.
Sharon: I moved to Crookston in 1986 to go to college. I got two degrees from UMC and have lived in the Ward 4 for over 30 years. As for my family, I had four children, one is deceased, one lives still in the community. I have a daughter who lives in Fertile and a son who lives in Minneapolis. And I single parented for many years [and] have been an advocate for the underdog for most of my life.
Q: Why are you running?
Don: I’m on the Park Board right now and one of the things we have accomplished is a five-year plan. I’m the chair of the Park Board and the plan had been on the shelf, we took it off and re-wrote it and now we have a plan to move forward in the next five years. And that’s being updated every year so we can move forward on that. And I thought having been working with the council members, living in Ward 4, that I can contribute to the city council in the areas that need to be looked at: the master plan for the future of Crookston. The bicycle committee that I serve on, we’re really moving on that right one now. That’s why I think it’s important [to] get an opportunity to serve Crookston and make it an even better place to live.
Sharon: I saw that there wasn’t anybody signed up to represent Ward 4 so I put in my two dollars worth, or your two cents worth, whatever you want to say just because I figured we needed representation.
