Donald Herding – Obit

Donald Bernard Herding, 86, of Red Lake Falls, MN passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 5:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bob Schreiner presiding.  Burial will be held later in the spring at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Donald Bernard Herding was born near Hankinson, ND on March 4, 1932 to Benjamin and Catherine (Bommersbach) Herding.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Phillips Catholic Church in Hankinson, ND.  Donald attended school in Greendale #1, a rural school.  He farmed until 1950 and then moved to Wahpeton, ND where he worked for Quine Construction.

Donald entered the US Army in 1955 and was discharged in 1959.

On April 25, 1959 Donald was united in marriage to Elizabeth Helen Kassa at St. Phillips Church in Hankinson, ND. The couple lived in Wahpeton, ND and Breckenridge, MN before moving to Red Lake Falls, MN in 1965 where he worked for Detroiter Mobile Homes, Inc. for a number of years.  Don and Liz purchased Don’s Café and Drive-In in 1988, which they operated until retiring in 1998.  He worked for Ken’s Electric part-time for many years as well.  Don also worked for Petterson Funeral Home and later Johnson Funeral Service.

Donald was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church & the Red Lake Falls, American Legion. He enjoyed cooking, creating bird feeding stations, tinkering, fixing, mowing grass, deer hunting, fishing, spending time with family and chatting with everyone.

He is survived by children: Veronica (Tracy) Anderson of SC, David (Shirley) Herding of Stillwater, MN, Beckie (Gary JR.) Pahlen of Red Lake Falls, MN; his grandchildren Ben (Emily) Herding, Amber (Mike) Seeger, Matthew (Kathleen) Herding, Lukas Wavra, Jacob Wavra, Holly Wavra, Courtney Pahlen, Caleb Pahlen; Great-grandchildren Logan and Landen, Morgan and Grace, Emerie; brother Roger (Phyllis) Herding of North Carolina; sisters Lois Smith of Breckenridge, MN and Mary Jane Thiele of Minneapolis, MN; several nieces and nephews.

Donald is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth on May 11, 2018; parents; grandparents; and siblings Marjorie Moore, Paul Herding, Shirley Ruggiera, and Tom Herding.
