Elizabeth “Betty Overgaard – Obit

Elizabeth “Betty Ann” Overgaard, 71, of Fargo, ND, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 5, 2022, at the Sanford Medical Center in Fargo with family at her side.

Betty was born in Crookston, MN on November 20, 1950. She was the second youngest of 6 children of the union of Orris Odin and Alice Erma (Thompson) Hegge. She grew up on the family farm near Eldred, MN, and was baptized and confirmed at the First English Lutheran Church in Eldred. She attended the Eldred Grade School for her elementary education, and high school years at Climax, MN where she graduated with the Class of 1968. Betty Ann then went on to attend Aaker’s Business School in Fargo and participated in several legal seminars throughout the years. At various times in her working career, she was employed as a Medical, Legal, and Insurance Secretary. On May 16, 1970, Betty Ann was united in marriage to Larry Albert Overgaard at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston. They would later become the proud parents of son, Matthew. In 1971 they moved from Crookston to Grafton, ND, and later lived for a time in the communities of Fisher, and Grand Forks, before settling in East Grand Forks. Sadly, Larry passed away on January 18, 2013. Three years later Betty Ann moved to Fargo to be closer to Matt and his family.

Betty Ann became a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Church in Fargo and made many wonderful friends among her church family. A few years ago she adopted a rescue cat she named “Miss Kitty’. It was also said that Miss Kitty adopted her.  Betty Ann had diabetes and on more than one occasion when her blood sugar dropped to dangerously low levels Miss Kitty sensed what was happening and aroused her. Sometimes by walking on her, or in one instance, pushing a lamp to the floor and waking Betty Ann up from the noise so that she could deal with her condition. Miss Kitty was truly family and a great bond developed between the two.

Betty Ann is very lovingly survived by her son, Matthew Overgaard (Victoria Pearson) of Fargo; 3 grandchildren: Isabella of Fargo, Braxton, a student at UND in Grand Forks, and Emma, of Fargo; her 3 brothers and sister: Kenneth Hegge of Mentor, MN, Dennis Hegge of East Grand Forks, MN, David Hegge of Eldred, MN, and Carol and Roger Beiswenger of Fisher, MN; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Earl and Faye Overgaard and Marlys and Vern Demarais of Crookston; together with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to Larry, her beloved husband and best friend for over 42 years, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Orris and Alice Hegge; brother, Donald Hegge; niece, Heather Beiswenger; and nephews, Steven and Ethan Hegge. From Larry’s side of the family she leaves her parents-in-law, Albert and Belva Overgaard; stepmother, Mildred (Myerchin) Overgaard; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dianne and Kelly Engelstad; and niece and nephew, Kari Demarais and Brian Engelstad. Blessed be the memory of Elizabeth “Betty Ann” Overgaard.

The funeral service for Betty Ann Overgaard will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston with The Rev. Rolf Preus, officiating. The service will be live-streamed by going to Betty’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view. Burial will be in the Eldred Cemetery at a later time.

Messages of condolence to Matt and his family can be made at the funeral home website.
