The Fosston Greyhounds scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons in a loser-out game in the Section 8A Baseball tournament played at Bemidji State University.
FIRST INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Bryer Strem started the game off with a single down the third baseline. Strem moved over to third base and scored on a dropped third strike, when the catcher threw to first to get the out and the Falcons led 1-0 lead.
Fosston’s Ryan Duppong started the bottom of the inning with a single before moving to third on a wild pitch. Vig walked and stole second. The next batter struck out before Mulry grounded out and a run scored to tie the game at 1-1.
SECOND INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Kolby Hemmah reached on an error and moved to second on the play. Drew Gullickson singled to score a run for a 2-1 lead. Teegyn Johnson was hit by a pitch and the next two batters struck out. Strem singled to centerfield to score another run for a 3-1 lead.
Fosston answered in the bottom of the inning when Rudie and Howard singled and Djerness walked to load the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout, the next batter, Duppong flew out to left field to knock in a run to get within a 3-2 deficit.
THIRD INNING –
Easton Petry was hit by a pitch, Caleb Sather reached on an error. After an out, Gullickson reached on an error that allowed two runs to score and Fertile-Beltrami led 5-2. Johnson hit a pop fly that was dropped but the Falcons were caught stealing a few pitches later for the third out of the inning.
Fosston loaded the bases again in the bottom of the inning when Sather walked, Mulry singled, and Christen walked. Fosston’s Rudie walked to score a run. The next batter struck out for a big Fertile-Beltrami out. The next batter grounded into a fielder’s choice and another run scored and Fertile-Beltrami’s lead was cut to 5-4.
FOURTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Strem and Steven Sather walked. Strem stole third base and that proved to be an important steal as Easton Petry flew out to centerfield and Strem scored for a 6-4 lead.
Steven Sather came in to pitch the bottom of the fourth inning and got the first batter to ground out, struck out the second batter and got the next batter to fly out to center field for a 1-2-3 inning.
FIFTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Gullickson walked with one out. Johnson reached on a fielder’s choice with Fosston getting the out at second base. Brady Bjerk and Kane Oistad were hit by a pitch but the next batter was retired in the Falcon threat was over.
Fosston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a pop out, line out, and a fly out.
SIXTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Petry and Caleb Sather singled with one out before the next two batters were retired.
Fosston’s Howard started the bottom of the inning iwth a Howard single and Djernes walk. Bailie laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third base. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice and the Falcons’ Strem fielded a ground ball and fired a strike to home plate and Caleb Sather applied the tag to get the out at home for the second out of the inning. Vig singled to score two runs and the game was tied at 6-6.
SEVENTH INNING-
Fertile-Beltrami’s Johnson led off the inning with a single to left field. After the next two batters were retired, Strem was hit by a pitch and runners were at first and third base. The next batter flew out and the game was tied at 6-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Fosston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning forcing extra innings.
EIGHTH INNING-
The Falcons’ Petry led off the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Caleb Sather singled and the Falcons had runners on the corners. Sather stole second base before a strikeout. Gullickson flew out to right field and Petry scored to give Fertile-Beltrami a 7-6 lead. Johnson was intentionally walked before a strikeout to end the half-inning.
Fosston’s Howard started the bottom of the inning with a walk before a strikeout. Bailie doubled to the left field fence and teh Greyhounds had runners at second and third base with one out. A wild pitch allowed the tying run to score with the winning run on third base. Vig singled to right field to score the run from third base and Fosston won the game 8-7.
Fertile-Beltrami’s season ends with a record of 10-8. Fosston improves to 10-10 on the year and will play Sacred Heart at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in a loser-out game at Bemidji State.
