The #2 ranked Fertile-Beltrami Falcons football team rushed for over 300 yards as they cruised to a 35-6 victory over Goodridge-Grygla to advance to the 9-man state semifinals.
1st Quarter –
Fertile-Beltrami received the opening kickoff, and Isaiah Wright scored a 91-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to immediately give the Falcons a 6-0 lead. Goodridge-Grygla got the ball, went three and out, and had to punt.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and stayed on the ground as Caleb Sather carried it for five yards. Wright got another carry for seven yards and a first down. Three plays later, Wright got another carry, this time for 39 yards that put the Falcons at first and goal. After two short runs and a two-yard pass to Bryer Strem, Caden Swenby found Derek Sorenson in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown, giving Fertile-Beltrami a 12-0 lead.
Goodridge-Grygla got the ball back, and Blake Rychlock got a six-yard carry. Carson Rubischko got a seven-yard carry, which gave the Chargers a first down. Kehan Nelson got a carry for two yards before Fertile-Beltrami’s Derek Sorenson forced two incompletions to bring up fourth down. On fourth down, Sorenson forced another incompletion, and the Chargers turned it over on downs.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and immediately fumbled. Goodridge-Grygla’s Donny Johnsrud recovered it, and the Chargers got the ball back. Rubischko got the first carry of the drive and went nine yards before Rychlock got a carry for seven yards. Nelson got two straight carries and gained nine yards before Rychlock got the first down on the next play with a nine-yard run. Rychlock got another carry for six yards, and Rubischko got a carry for three yards, which brought the quarter to an end with the Chargers facing a third and one.
2nd Quarter –
Goodridge-Grygla started the quarter with a for carry from Rychlock that got a first down and gave the Chargers first and goal. After three short runs, Goodridge-Grygla went for it on fourth down. They attempted to pass, but Fertile-Beltrami’s Jack Leiser and Caden Stoltman combined for a sack to give the ball back to the Falcons and keep the Chargers out of the end zone.
Fertile-Beltrami took over, and after a short run and an incompletion, Wright got a carry for 22 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Swenby completed a pass to Sorenson for 12 yards. A defensive personal foul penalty gave the Falcons an extra 15 yards before Wright got two carries that totaled seven yards. Swenby kept it himself, gained five yards, and got the first down. Wright got a carry that looked like it would be a 15-yard touchdown, but it got called back due to an offensive chop block penalty. After a run for no gain and two incompletions, the Falcons went for it on 4th and 25 and could not convert.
Goodridge-Grygla took over, went three and out, and had to punt. The Falcons took over, and three plays into the drive, Goodridge-Grygla’s Sawyer Jacobson intercepted a pass to give it back to the Chargers.
Goodridge-Grygla took over and quickly found themselves with a fourth and one. Nelson got the carry and gained the one-yard need to give the Chargers a first down. Goodridge-Grygla ran out the clock until one final fourth-down play fell incomplete. Fertile-Beltrami led at the half 12-0.
3rd Quarter –
Goodridge-Grygla received the second-half kickoff, went three and out, and had to punt. Fertile-Beltrami took over, and on the first play of the drive, Wright took a carry 60 yards for a touchdown. Swenby completed a pass to Preston Hanson for the two-point conversion, and the Falcons took a 20-0 lead.
Goodridge-Grygla got the ball back, and after three straight gains of three yards, they had fourth and one. On the fourth down play, Fertile-Beltrami’s Sather made the tackle for loss to give the ball back to the Falcons.
Fertile-Beltrami kept it on the ground to start the drive with a four-yard carry from Wright, a five-yard carry from Strem, and a four-yard carry from Swenby to get the first down. On the next play, Strem got a carry 13 yards, and two plays later, Strem got another carry for nine yards and a touchdown. Swenby ran in the two-point conversion, and the Falcons took a 28-0 lead.
Goodridge-Grygla got the ball back and had a good drive going, but Joe Sorenson intercepted a pass, and the Falcons took over. The quarter ended after three run plays.
4th Quarter –
Fertile-Beltrami started the quarter with a third and seven that became a third and two after Swenby forced a defensive offsides penalty. Swenby got a carry for four yards and a first down. Two plays later, Swenby hit Hanson for an 18-yard gain. Goodridge-Grygla committed a helmet-to-helmet penalty on the play, and afterward, they received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that gave the Falcons an extra 30 yards. After a short run and an incompletion, Swenby got a carry for eight yards, bringing up fourth and one. Swenby got the carry, went six yards, and scored a touchdown. Easton Petry kicked the extra point, and the Falcons took a 35-0 lead.
Goodridge-Grygla had a solid return from Rubischko on the ensuing kickoff, and the Chargers took over in Falcon territory. A holding penalty put Goodridge-Grygla behind the chains, but they got those yards back on a 20-yard pass to Owen Larson. Kolby Hemmah caught a pass for seven yards, and a helmet-to-helmet penalty on the Falcons gave the Chargers an extra 15 yards. Lewis Jones caught a pass for 13 yards on the next play, which gave Goodridge-Grygla first and goal. The Chargers tried two QB sneaks, and Rychlock to the second in for a one-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 35-6.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and put their backups in. Cred Tollefson got three carries totaling 18 yards, Steven Sather got two carries totaling 22 yards, and Easton Petry and Gavin Aakhus got one carry for six yards and three yards, respectively. The Falcons ran the rest of the clock out and won the game 35-6.
Fertile-Beltrami improves to 12-0 and takes on Kingsland in the semifinals. Goodridge-Grygla ends their season with a 9-2 record.
