Bryer Strem’s 5 TDs lead Fertile-Beltrami to 5th straight Section 6 9-Man Championship

The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons dominated the Fosston Greyhounds from start to finish on Thursday night, and the Falcons won 56-0 to claim their fifth consecutive Section 6-9 Player Championship.

1st Quarter
Fosston got the ball to start the contest, but they were held to a three-and-out. After a punt, it only took the Falcons two plays before Bryer Strem took a pop pass 39 yards to the house to put the Falcons up 6-0. Fosston got another three-and-out, Fertile-Beltrami yet again only needed 2 plays to score, and Strem would take it again, this time on a 71-yard rushing score to put the Falcons up 14-0 after a successful 2-point try. Fosston got the ball back once again, and this time chose not to punt after getting their first 1st down of the contest, going for it on 4th down, but the pass from Noah Martinson was caught short of the sticks, and the Falcons got the ball back once again. This time, they took their time driving down the field, feeding Caleb Sather, and by the time the first quarter ended, the Falcons were in the red zone.

2nd Quarter
It only took 37 seconds of the second quarter before the Falcons got back on the board again, as Caleb Sather capped off the drive he captained with a 4-yard score, which put the Falcons up 22-0. Fosston were stymied again, and forced to punt one more time, and the Falcons capitalized quickly once again, this time allowing Gavin Aakhus to air the ball out, finding Bryer Strem for a 45-yard touchdown strike, the third score for Strem in the half. Fosston turned the ball over on downs once again, and Strem decided to add to his tally, taking on a 6-yard touchdown rush to put the Falcons up 38-0. This would not be the end of the scoring for Strem, as after yet another punt for the Greyhounds, Strem recorded his 5th touchdown of the half, catching a 17-yard pass from Aakhus, which gave the Falcons a 44-0 lead headed into the break.

3rd Quarter –
As the second half got started, the Falcons began to employ some more reserves, and this resulted in them not scoring on a possession for the first time in the game, and the ball would be punted away. However, the Falcon defense continued to be stingy, providing next to no room for the Greyhound offense to move forward. Halfway through the quarter, the Greyhounds were turned away with their third turnover on downs, and the Falcons were then able to cash in, as Creed Tollefson popped one in from 3 yards out to give the Falcons a 50-0 lead, after a second consecutive blocked extra point. Fosston got the ball back, but was forced to punt the ball again, and Fertile-Beltrami was able to score for the final time in the game, as after all the reserves came in, it became Julian Ystenes to score from 17 yards away to put the Falcons up 56-0, which would be a score that would stand at the end of the third quarter.

4th Quarter –
Neither team was able to score in the 4th quarter. Fosston was the team closest to scoring in the quarter, after putting their reserves into the game, Aiden Peterson and Gavin Curfman led the Greyhounds into the red zone, including their second and final first down of the game. The Falcons were able to hold the Greyhounds to another 4th down, and that’s when the only turnover of the game occurred, as a throw to the back of the end zone was intercepted by Connor Haaven, giving the Falcons the ball back. They would be able to wind the rest of the clock down and win 56-0 to claim the section championship for the 5th year in a row.

Fertile-Beltrami improves to 7-3 on the season and will play in the first round of the State 9-Man Football playoffs on Thursday at either Moorhead or Grand Rapids. Fosston’s season comes to an end at 6-5.
