FIRE WHIRL OR HEAT TORNADO FORMS OVER A CONTROLLED BURN TUESDAY SOUTH OF CROOKSTON

KROX received a picture (above) of a fire whirl also commonly known as a heat tornado.  The heat tornado formed over a controlled burn of a field along Highway 102 Tuesday.  A fire whirl is caused when the wind whirls around a hot fire causing an updraft of warm air and smoke to make a vortex.
The burn was in a corn field and corn stalk debris floated into Crookston as the wind shifted Tuesday evening.
