Crookston Community Theatre to present a Variety Show and One-Act Play

On Thursday, June 26,  Crookston Community Theatre will present a Variety Show and One-Act Play at 7:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, at 510 N. Broadway, in Crookston, MN.

Crookston Community Theatre is doing a year of One-Act Plays, they call it, and this will be the first of two productions that will be held this year. This year’s first production is a Variety Show and One-Act performance, and it will be for one night only.

We sat down with the One-Act director for this production, Gaye Wick, and the Variety Show director, Sandy Perkins, to find out more about this unique production. “We are doing a whole year of one-acts, so we decided to put a one-act on, and the one we chose was only ten minutes long, so we wanted something else with it,” says Wick. “When we talked, Sandy and I, we thought a variety show would be a good thing to add to it.”

What kind of performances will be part of the Variety Show? “In the Variety Show, we have got the Women’s Area Community Chorus, we have the bells, which is not just from the church anymore, it’s more of a community bell choir,” says Perkins. “We’ve got a very good pianist and a guitarist.” Also in the lineup for the Variety Show are some vocals and an organ performance.

The One-Act is called Match Point and is written by Frank Gilroy. It is short, so Wick would not give up much on the plot. “What I can tell you is, it takes place in a Desert Inn Resort,” says Wick. “Ten minutes is relatively short for a one-act, but it’s a very powerful one. In those ten minutes, it is filled with all kinds of innuendos. You need to watch the actors’ faces and body language.” The cast for Match Point consists of three individuals: Anders Berggren, Aryanna Ostgaard, and Dani Johannson.

Crookston Community Theatres’ second production for 2025 will be in October. “In the fall, in October, we are going to do two One-Acts, and they will be longer. They will be at least 30 minutes each,” says Wick. “It will be a Dinner Theater and it will be out at the Crookston Inn.” Anders Berggren will be holding auditions for the show this fall and will be directing the production as well.
