The Augusta GreenJackets, Low-A East League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, have announced their 2021 opening day roster, and former University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Zach Seipel is on the team.
The Atlanta Braves drafted Seipel in the 27th round of the 2018 draft. The 6’4 210-pound right-handed pitcher from St. Paul played in Crookston for three years. He was a three-time All-NSIC selection, earning All-NSIC First Team honors in 2018. He had 31 career saves and in his last season with UMC, his junior season, he had a 4-2 record with a 2.70 ERA in 36.2 innings pitched with eight saves.
After being drafted by Atlanta, Seipel elected to skip his senior season and play rookie ball for the Braves Rookie team, the Danville Braves. He has pitched in 24 games in the minor leagues with a 5-4 record while posting at 3.28 ERA. Seipel has pitched 60.1 innings, striking out 67 while walking 29 batters.
The GreenJackets season opener is Tuesday, May 4, at 7:05 p.m. against the Columbia Fireflies (Kansas City Royals).
