The Crookston American Legion Nels T. Wold Post 20 baseball team committed eight errors in a 14-10 loss to Fosston in a game played at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.
Fosston got things going right away in the top of the first inning. Norland singled and stole second base. After a fly-out, Trey Boushee reached on an error and stole second base. Noah Mahlen walked and after one run scored, two runs scored on a two-out single to give Fosston a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second inning, a Fosston batter reached on an infield hit and advanced to second base on a steal. A few pitches later he scored on another hit for a 4-0 lead.
Crookston answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Cade DeLeon singled up the middle, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Carter Bruggeman sacrifice fly to centerfield to get within a 4-1 deficit.
Neither team scored in the third inning, but Crookston scored some runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carter Bruggeman reached on an error, Jackson Demarais walked, and Austin Trinkle singled to load the bases. George Widman reached on an infield single and a run scored. Alex Longoria walked to score a run and Jacob Miller hit a line drive to centerfield that was caught, but another run scored to tie the game at 4-4 with one out and runners at second and third base. Cade Coauette hit a slow roller to the gap on the right side of the infield and the pitcher didn’t cover first base and Cade was safe at first base and another run scored for a 5-4 lead. Brooks Butt followed with a line drive to centerfield, but it was caught and another run scored for a 6-4 lead with two outs.
Fosston answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning with a walk and an error allowing a runner to advance to second base. The next Fosston batter singled to score a run to get within a 6-5 deficit.
Crookston responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Demarais and Widman singled which was followed by an Alex Longoria single to score a run and Crookston led 7-5.
Fosston took the lead in the top of the sixth inning when they scored four runs. The inning with Fosston’s leadoff batter reaching on another Crookston error. The next batter singled and that is when the wheels fell off for the Crookston pitching. The next batter walked, followed by a hit batter, another walk, and after a pitching change, the next batter walked. The next batter struck out before a single and Fosston had a 9-7 lead.
Crookston responded with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth. Coauette led off with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on another passed ball. Brooks butt followed with a singled and advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on another passed ball and scored later in the inning to tie the game at 9-9.
Fosston continued to take advantage of Crookston’s errors and wild pitching as the leadoff batter tripled. After a strikeout, the next batter reached on a Crookston error, the next batter walked before a two rbi double. The next batter walked and after a ground out, the next Fosston batter singled to score two more runs and Fosston had a 14-9 lead.
Crookston needed to score six points to get the win and started the inning with Trinkle reaching on an error. Trinkle was retired at second base on a double play, but with two outs Crookston tried to mount a comeback. Longoria walked and stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Jacob Miller singled to score Longoria and Crookston trailed 14-10. Coauette singled but the next batter was retired for the third out and Fosston held on for a 14-10 victory.
Crookston drops to 7-8 on the year and will travel to the Dickinson tournament this weekend with the first game on Friday.
