Kari Trudeau, of Gentilly/Crookston, and a cosmetologist at Shear Sisters in Crookston, recently found out that she had invasive ductal carcinoma when she had a routine mammogram earlier this year.
On October 2nd, 2024, Kari underwent a routine mammogram and received a diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma. She faced the reality of choosing surgery or radiation treatment. With support from her wonderful friends and family, Kari navigated the challenges of important decision-making throughout November. She opted for a double mastectomy to avoid radiation treatment. The surgery was today (December 12th), and Kari is feeling incredibly blessed by her amazing support system. She will have to recover and be out of work for 6-8 weeks. As for the next steps, she will continue to be monitored for the next five years and undergo hormone therapy. Despite uncertainties, Kari has felt overwhelmed, in the best way possible, by the love and support around her.
Friends and co-workers have set up a fund to help with expenses as Trudeau isn’t able to work for up to two months after the surgery and that means no income as a self-employed hairdresser. “We are doing a fundraiser for our dear friend and co-worker, Kari Trudeau. We have an account set up at Bremer Bank. If you want to make a donation, please write checks to Kari Trudeau,” said co-worker and friend Tiffany Fee. “You can also drop any donations off at the Shear Sisters salon. Her Venmo is in the picture below if you want to donate that way. Thanks for your support during this difficult time. Cancer Sucks!!!”
Kari said that she was glad she went in for her routine mammogram. “I’m grateful for the early detection of invasive ductal carcinoma through my routine mammogram on October 2. I feel empowered to tackle the road ahead, whether it’s a lumpectomy with radiation or a double mastectomy. Watching my mom face cancer health challenges has definitely helped me prepare for this bump in the road. With surgery scheduled December 12, I’m thankful for the outpouring of support from my family and community in Crookston, where I’ve lived for over 40+ years,” said Trudeau. “As a self-employed business owner, I’m focused on the next steps, including hormone therapy and regular checkups for the next few years to come. I’m determined to emerge from this stronger and more resilient.”
