Gary Grove – OBIT

Gary Grove, 91, of Red Lake Falls, MN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls, MN, with his loving family by his side.

The service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Rev. Jonathan Dodson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Emardville Cemetery, rural Plummer, MN. Military honors will be provided by Plummer American Legion Post and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Gary D. Grove was born February 16, 1933, near Climax, MN, the son of Nordeen and Alice (Lindem) Grove. He attended school in Fisher, MN.

On July 3, 1954, he married Mavis Fern Ydstie at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer, MN. To this union, six children were born: Gary Dean, Allen, Linda, Kenneth, Lorie, and Jonathan. The couple lived in various places in the upper Midwest, settling on a farm near Plummer in 1961.

On July 27, 1956, Gary entered into service in Fargo, ND, with the United States Army. He served in Germany and France and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany)/Expert Carbine M-1/Sharpshooters Carbine and Good Conduct Medal. Gary was Honorably Discharged, and his terminal date of reserve obligation was July 26, 1962.

In his early years, Gary drove a milk truck and farmed and painted vehicles in his spare time. For many years, Gary did moldings and cabinets at Detroiter in Red Lake Falls, MN, and later worked at Thibert Chevrolet in Red Lake Falls.

Gary enjoyed fishing, playing cards with friends, working with wood, wrenching on vehicles and old tractors, 4-wheeling, and spending time at his lake home on Clearwater Lake. Most of all, he loved and cherished the time spent with his family.

Gary is survived by children Gary Dean Grove of Dilworth, MN; Allen (Sue) Grove of Glyndon, MN; Linda (Robert) Wilson of Plummer, MN; Kenneth (Kathy) Grove of Moorhead, MN; Lorie (John) Syring of Montevideo, MN and Jonathan Grove of Highlanding, MN; grandchildren Adam, Aric, Josh, Amy, Michael, Michelle, Katlyn, Kaylee, Lexie; great-grandchildren Parker, Hadley, Benson, Bailey, Clayton, Colton, Owen, Liam, Jacob, Benjamin, Michael, Brady, Matthew, Aiden and Carter; siblings, Darrell Grove, Red Lake Falls, MN, Don Grove, TX, Rodney (Diane) Grove, Red Lake Falls, MN and Cheryl (Russell) Hince, Brooks, MN along with several nieces and nephews.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, infant baby girl, daughter-in-law, Lynette; brothers, Sherlen and Levonne; and sister, Jean Carpenter.
