Gerald C. Shulstad-OBIT

Gerald C. Shulstad, 48, Fargo, ND, formerly of Halstad, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Sanford Hospice House, Fargo, ND.

Gerry was born on May 17, 1975, at Fargo, the son of Kathy (Benoit) and Gary Shulstad. He was educated at Norman County West schools in Hendrum and Halstad, graduating in May 1993. He studied Agriculture at the University of Minnesota in Crookston, MN, for two years. During summers, he worked for his uncle Wayne Shulstad at the family farm near Rollag, MN. He worked at Perry Farms near Crookston for several years and he was known as a good and reliable employee. Most recently he worked for Remington Seeds in Mapleton, ND as a seed technician in the warehouse and doing field inspections around the region.

Gerry enjoyed many outdoor activities like snowmobiling, motorcycling, four-wheeling, boating, and sailing. At one time, he owned a sailboat that was big enough to sail on Leech Lake. He very much enjoyed trout fishing in the Beartooth Mountains in Wyoming and he was planning a trip later this summer, even as his health was failing. Grandpa Gordon and his uncles were his favorite fishing partners in the mountains.  He liked ice fishing with his dad and uncles also, even when the fish did not cooperate. His other interests included history, economics and politics, 70’s and 80’s hard rock music, Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.

He was also known as someone who could fix almost anything, mechanical or electrical or with a small engine. He was good at welding and woodworking. One of his latest ideas was to create a small train for his nieces and nephews to ride on, pulled by a John Deere lawn tractor he bought last summer, but that did not get finished because of his declining health.

Gerry is survived by his parents, Kathy and Gary; one sister, Meg (Barry) Bradley, and their children Barry Jr. and John, Moorhead, MN; three brothers, Nick Shulstad, Grand Forks, ND, Andy (Abbie) Shulstad, and their children Theresa, Caleb, Noah, Annabelle, and Taylor, Shelly, MN, and Will (Lea) Shulstad, and their children James, Paul, Luke, Felicity, and Eleanor, Moorhead, MN; and many aunts and uncles and cousins from both sides of the family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gordon C. Shulstad and Maxine (Lee) Shulstad and Raymond L. Benoit and Florence (Friederichs) Benoit.
