GOODRIDGE-GRYGLA ENDS GAME ON 22-8 RUN TO BEAT RED LAKE COUNTY BOY’S HOOPS

The Red Lake County Rebels Boy’s Basketball team battled the entire game, but the Goodridge-Grygla Chargers were 19-24 at the free throw line and ended the game on a 22-8 run to defeat the Rebels 70-57 in the Section 8A Tournament on Thursday night in a game played at the University of Minnesota Crookston.

FIRST HALF –
Goodridge-Grygla got off to a fast start beginning the game on a 14-4 run to force a Red Lake County timeout with 12:38 remaining in the half. Points were hard to come by and the Rebels would score the next five on a three from Isaiah Philion and a layup from Owen Chervestad to cut the deficit to 14-9. The Chargers went on a five-minute scoring drought but were able to hold onto the lead with 7:16 remaining until halftime. Red Lake County would pull within a couple of points multiple times but Goodridge-Grygla would always respond with a score of their own to maintain a lead. It went on like this for the remainder of the first half until the Chargers were in front 21-16 with just a couple of minutes left. Red Lake County would breakthrough and rattle off an 8-0 run late in the half to take their first lead of the game at 24-21. The run was highlighted by a Gerald Melin jumper, a three-pointer, and a three from John Powers. The lead wouldn’t hold as Goodridge-Grygla would score the last four points of the half to take a slight 25-24 lead into the halftime break. Leading the way for the Rebels in the first half was Owen Chervestad with 7 points. Blake Rychlock led the way for the Chargers with 9 points in the first eighteen minutes.

SECOND HALF –
Both teams came out on fire to being the second half and it started with four straight points for the Rebels on layups from Owen Chervestad and Chase Nelson to take a 28-25 lead. Goodridge-Grygla would score the next five to go in front 30-28, and after Gerald Melin scored five of his own points, it was 33-30 in favor of the Rebels with 14:33 remaining in the game. The Chargers would take off and go on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 38-33 edge. Red Lake County would answer back and Gareld Melin would help pull the Rebels within two points trailing 40-38. Goodridge-Grygla from that point on would maintain the lead and do an excellent job of knocking down free throws and open three-pointers to stay in front, and even though the Rebels were scoring, they were unable to take the lead and found themselves down 48-42. However, Red Lake County wouldn’t quit, and the Rebels would go on a 7-0 run capped off by a Gerald Melin three to take a 49-48 lead with 5:30 remaining in the game. That would be the last lead the Rebels would have, as Goodridge-Grygla would end the game on a 22-8 run to secure a 70-57 win, securing a trip back into the Section 8A Quarterfinals. A big difference in the game, especially the second half, was free throw shooting, as the Chargers were 19-24 at the free throw line as a team, and the Rebels were just 5-14.

Red Lake County finishes its season with a final record of 13-14. They will lose four seniors from the team as Isaiah Philion, Gerald Melin, Mathew Renner, and Chase Nelson will all graduate this spring. Goodridge-Grygla improves to 15-12 and will take on Sacred Heart in the Section 8A Quarterfinals this Saturday.
