GRAND FORKS POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS RESPONDED TWO OPIOID OVERDOSES IN PAST TWO DAYS

The Grand Forks Police Department would like the public to be aware that we have responded to the scene of two opioid overdoses in the past two days. In both cases CPR was performed on the victim and naloxone was administered by first responders. Fortunately, both victims were revived and appear to have fully recovered.

We urge citizens to refrain from using illegal drugs and want to take this opportunity to share risk factors and prevention tips.

Risk factors to be aware of include previous overdoses, a period of abstinence or illness, mixing opioids with other substances, using alone, and use by injection.

While we strongly advocate not ingesting these substances there are several important prevention tips to follow if one chooses to do so:

  • Do not use alone.
  • Avoid mixing substances.
  • Start with small amounts.
  • Keep naloxone available and do not let it freeze.
  • If injecting, use clean equipment every time.
  • Treat every dose as if it contains fentanyl.

Grand Forks Public Health will have naloxone (Narcan Nasal Spray) available at no cost for individuals, or loved ones of individuals, at risk for overdose on Thursday, October 3 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 4 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Monday, October 7 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Training takes about 20 minutes, and no personally identifiable information will be asked.

Inspire Pharmacy also has naloxone (Narcan Nasal Spray) available over the counter at no cost during normal business hours (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday – Friday). Please budget 20-30 minutes for training.

For questions regarding naloxone, you may contact Michael Dulitz, Opioid Response Project Coordinator, at (701)787-8129. For information on treatment and recovery resources in the Grand Forks area, visit www.gfrecovery.info

There are many resources available to assist with treatment and recovery. Attached to this media release is an Overdose Prevention & Safety handout created by the Grand Forks Call to Action.  Please feel free to use this handout in any news stories you run subsequent to this release.
