GRAND FORKS POLICE UPDATE FATAL HIT & RUN INVESTIGATION

UPDATE 12/10/19 10:50 a.m. 

Vehicle debris recovered at the scene of this crash was submitted to the FBI Lab in Quantico, VA. Results indicate the striking vehicle was most likely a white 2003 – 2015 Nissan Murano. As previously released, the damage is believed to be to the right front corner of the vehicle and possibly to the hood.

While a Nissan Murano is the most likely vehicle, other potential vehicles are a Nissan Rogue produced between 2006 – 2016, a Nissan X-Trail produced between 2011-2019, and a Nissan Quest produced between 2010 – 2017.

The investigation into this case is ongoing and the Grand Forks Police Department urges anyone with information to contact us. It is important to remember that the damage may have been repaired since the crash which occurred on April 7, 2019.

A reward of $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver of the vehicle that struck Christina Melvin.

The investigation into this case is ongoing. In an effort to elicit information, the Grand Forks Police Department is offering a reward of $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver of the vehicle that struck Christina Melvin.

As a reminder, any information you have could be important. We would also like to take this opportunity to urge the driver to come forward on their own. In cases such as this, it is better for the person to come forward as opposed to being identified by the police through the investigation.

UPDATE 4/9/2019 11:16 a.m.

The victim, in this case, has been identified as Christina Lynn Melvin, 39 y/o, of Bedford, PA. Melvin was passing through Grand Forks on the Amtrak train when this incident occurred.

The investigation is ongoing and the driver of the striking vehicle is urged to contact law enforcement immediately. The vehicle likely has front end damage and is believed to have been traveling eastbound in the 4500-4600 blk of Demers Ave when the crash occurred. The evidence is being analyzed in order to identify the make and model of the vehicle; however, at this time the type of vehicle and extent and exact location of the damage is unknown.

Several witnesses who saw the victim walking in the area have been interviewed by investigators. If you saw the victim in the area or have any other information to provide and have not been spoken to, please contact the Grand Forks Police Department. The information you have may be important to the case.

ORIGINAL STORY

On Sunday, April 7 at approximately 4:59 a.m., officers of the Grand Forks Police Department were dispatched to the area of Interstate 29 and Demers Avenue for a report of a possibly deceased subject.  CPR was attempted but the female victim was pronounced deceased while being transported to Altru Hospital.

Evidence obtained on scene appears to indicate that the victim was struck by an unknown vehicle.  Identification of the victim is pending at this time.

The Grand Forks Police Department is asking that anyone with information in reference to this incident call as soon as possible.  The crash is believed to have occurred from 04:45 am to 04:59 am.  The striking vehicle would potentially have damage to the front bumper and hood.

The Grand Forks Police Department was assisted by Altru, the Grand Forks Fire Department, the Grand Forks Sheriff Department and the ND Highway Patrol.  The Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team and the Regional UAS team also assisted in the investigation.
