GREENWAY SCORES TWICE IN SECOND PERIOD FOR 2-1 WIN OVER PIRATES BOY’S HOCKEY

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team honored their seven seniors (Jaren Bailey, Dalton Delude, Jackson Demarais, Jack Doda, Thor Harbott, Nathan Kelly, and Zach Tahran) on Friday night as the Pirates hosted the Greenway Raiders on Senior Night. Jack Doda scored, but the Raiders spoiled the Pirates Senior Night with two goals in the second period for a 2-1 win.

FIRST PERIOD –
Both teams came out aggressive and got several shots on goal early in the game. at the 5:46 mark Kadin Edwards would be called for tripping putting the Raiders on the Power Play for the first time in the game. The Raiders would win the opening faceoff on the Power Play, but their first shot would get blocked by Jack Doda and head down to the other side of the ice. The Greenway starting goaltender Derek Giebau would skate out of the net to try and get the puck but Doda would beat him to it and chip it through his legs, giving him a wide-open net. Doda would bury the shot and give the Pirates the 1-0 lead on just their third shorthanded goal of the season. For Doda, it was his 19th goal of the year. The Pirates would also kill the Power Play and each team would get a few good looks here and there throughout the period. Late in the frame, the Raiders would get called for a cross-check and Crookston would go on their first Power Play of the night. The Pirates weren’t able to capitalize and the two teams would skate into the locker room with Crookston in front 1-0. The Pirates outshot Greenway 15-10 in the opening frame.

SECOND PERIOD –
A short time into the middle frame, Jackson Reese would be called for a hold, giving the Raiders another Power Play. The Pirates did a good job initially on the penalty kill, but right before the Power Play expired, Greenway would deflect a puck in front of the net that sailed over Bailey and landed in the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1. Gino Troumbly would be given the goal, and Ashton Sanderson earned the assist. Greenway started to take over the game and was getting better chances than the Pirates were. at the 10:54 mark of the period the Raiders would strike again on a goal from Jace Kammeier. He would skate into the Pirates zone, and weave his way to the middle of the ice before firing a shot that would sneak through Bailey and into the net, giving Greenway the 2-1 lead. Crookston would hit the post later in the period, but otherwise, the Raiders did a good job of slowing down the Pirates and they would take a 2-1 lead into the final period. Carter Trudeau was also called for a trip with just fifteen seconds left in the period, giving the Raiders 1:45 of time left on a Power Play to start the third. Shots through two periods were in favor of the Pirates 25-22.

THIRD PERIOD –
The Pirates were able to kill the penalty off right away to start the period but struggled to get offense going. They would get a great opportunity to tie the game with a Power Play after the Raiders were called for an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. Crookston would generate a couple of decent looks, but the Raiders goaltender Giebau would continue his great performance and turn the Pirates away keeping Greenway in front 2-1 with ten minutes remaining. Over the next several minutes the two teams each would get a few decent looks, but neither team could scratch across a goal. With 5:34 remaining Jackson Demarais would be called for elbowing and that would give the Raiders a chance to take a two-goal lead with a Power Play. The good news for the Pirates is that they killed the Power Play, but the bad news was that it took an extra two minutes off the clock leaving Crookston with just over three minutes left to get the equalizing goal. As time continued to wind down, the Pirates would pull goaltender Jaren Bailey with just over a minute left to put the extra attacker on the ice. Greenway would send the puck the length of the ice multiple times but miss the Pirates net, leaving Crookston with thirty seconds remaining and needing a goal. As the final seconds wound down, Crookston would get the puck near the net, and it became an absolute scrum with players fighting for the puck. As the buzzer sounded, the Pirates were unable to get the puck into the back of the net, and the Raiders would hang on to spoil the Crookston Senior Night, getting the 2-1 win.

Crookston falls to 2-16-1 and will stay busy next week, as the Pirates play four games starting on Monday night when they take on Mayville-Portland. Greenway improves to 8-11 with the win.
