The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team had six players competing in the Section 8A Individual Tennis Tournament being held at Courts Plus in Fargo, North Dakota. In singles, Crookston has Abby Borowicz and Brekken Tull competing. In doubles, Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson along with Halle Bruggeman and Kaylie Clauson are competing. After the first round and quarterfinals were played on Friday, the Pirates have the doubles team of Winjum and Gunderson left as they will play in the semi-finals on Saturday. The results of all the Pirates on Friday are below.
SINGLES – About an hour after wrapping up a three hour and 15-minute match in the team tournament #7 seed Abby Borowicz bounced back with another match as she beat #10 seed Audrey Ruckheim of Parkers Prairie 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Borowicz was up for another battle as she came out strong while taking on the #2 seed Morgan Koppelman of Park Rapids. Abby won the first set 7-6 as she was looking for an upset, but Koppleman won the next two sets 6-2, 6-4, and Borowicz’s Pirate tennis career came to an end.
Brekken Tull received the #6 seed and beat #11 seed Emma Johnson of Roseau 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Brekken lost to the #3 seed Libby Hartman of Wadena-Deer-Creek 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, and Tull’s solid season came to an end.
DOUBLES – #1 seed Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson received a first-round bye and beat #9 seed Kayla Meeks and Cadie Leeseberg of Wadena-Deer Creek in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-0. Winjum and Gunderson advance to the semifinals to take on the #5 seed Jessie Danielson and Erin Brandt of Roseau on Saturday morning.
#7 seed Halle Bruggeman and Kaylie Clauson beat #10 seed Emmy Goochey and Abby Runyan of Park Rapids in a roller coaster match 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Bruggeman and Clauson lost to the #2 seed Katie and Anna Fiemeyer of Wadena-Deer Creek 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, and the Crookston duo’s outstanding season came to an end and Bruggeman played her final tennis match as a Pirate.
