Harry Newman Manole, 90, known affectionately as “The Sweetheart Bread Man” and renowned for having the “best buns in town,” dedicated his life to serving the community of Crookston. He was a beloved figure, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those he encountered. With great sadness, we announce that Harry passed away on August 23, 2023, at Villa St. Vincent. 
Born on December 13, 1932, in Crookston, Harry embodied the spirit of perseverance and hard work from an early age. As a young boy, he took pride in shining shoes—a testament to his strong work ethic that remained with him throughout his life. Harry graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1950 and embarked on a journey that would make him a cherished member of the community.
A decade after High School, Harry met the love of his life, Marlys, whom he lovingly referred to as “Mushie or the Queen Bee.” On July 8, 1961, the two were wed at Rodnes Lutheran Church, near Erskine, MN. The two began their life together in Crookston, and shared 53 wonderful and happy years together. With Marlys, Harry had two more daughters, Jerri Moe (Craig) and Jennifer Erdmann (Chad). Sadly, in 2014, Marlys passed away; we can find comfort in knowing Harry and Marlys have been reunited in their union. Prior to his marriage to Marlys, Harry was blessed with Three daughters, Peggy Burgard, Brenda Martin, and Robin Pauza. Harry was a proud grandpa to all of his many grandchildren.
Harry’s career as a bread man spanned decades, earning him the well-deserved nickname “The Sweetheart Bread Man.” Delivering freshly baked goods with a smile became his trademark, and he took great pride in everything he did. He loved his role, it also allowed him to build relationships and friendships with people in Crookston that lasted his whole life. Harry would greet all with a resounding, “Hey Buddy.”
Beyond his dedication to serving others throughout his career, one of Harry’s greatest joys came from family, especially babysitting his grandkids, Elise and Dokken. Harry and Maryls spent four years happily watching Elise and Dokken, creating memories and a bond with the grandkids that they will never forget. The family spent many summers at the cabin on Union Lake, whom his father built. This is also where they spent many days on Harry’s pontoon.
Outside of work and family life, Harry pursued various hobbies and interests that brought him immense happiness. His athleticism shone through as he actively participated in the Crookston bowling and baseball leagues—a true sports enthusiast of all sports. His talent on the field in baseball was so astonishing he earned the nickname, “Yogi”. He was also a very talented hockey players for CHS.
Harry’s warm personality endeared him to everyone he met. Hardworking, fun-loving, and easygoing, he possessed a charm that lit up any room. Countless individuals considered him the coolest dad in town, a testament to the love and admiration he inspired in his children. The enduring relationships he developed throughout his life are a testament to Harry’s genuine and compassionate nature. During his stay at the Villa Nursing Home, Harry was a staff favorite! He loved the staff and was truly appreciative of the care and conversation they provided to him.
Throughout his life, Harry won several awards that highlighted his talents, one of which was the safe driving award he got from his time on the bread truck. He was an Alderman of the 5th Ward, a member of the Eagles and Lion’s Club, served on many committees and was honored at the recent Night to Unite, unfortunately he was unable to attend this in person, but felt the love of the community from the Villa. Crookston has always been his home and he was very proud to make it a better place to live and to raise his family.
As we bid farewell to Harry Newman Manole, we take solace in knowing that he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. He will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to serving others through various ways in Crookston, and his infectious spirit that brightened the lives of countless individuals. Harry’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but we find comfort in the cherished memories he bestowed upon us all.
Today we mourn the loss of Harry Newman Manole, but let us also celebrate a life well-lived—a life that enriched our community, brought joy to many hearts, and left an enduring legacy of kindness and resilience. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Harry is survived by his five daughters: Peggy Burgard (Kenny), Brenda Martin (Greg), Robin Pauza (Joel), Jerri Moe (Craig) of Eau Claire, WI, and Jennifer Erdmann (Chad) of Crookston. 2 Sister-in-laws: Yvonne (Gale) Christopherson of Maple Valley, WA, and Ruth Clifton (Roger) of Georgia; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great chandchild; as well as nieces and nephews.
Harry is preceded in death by his wife Maryls Manole; and his parents: Harry and Alice Manole.
There will be a prayer service on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Stenshoel-Houske Funeral home. The prayer service will start at 6:30. The funeral service celebrating Harry’s life will be on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service.
