HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOLDING SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE ON MEET-THE-TEACHER NIGHTS

The Highland Elementary School is continuing its School Supply Drive during the Meet-the-Teacher Nights on Wednesday, August 31, and Thursday, September 1, at the Elementary School and is still accepting donations. The drive is sponsored by the Highland Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

The drive is meant to help students that may not have the means to provide themselves with all of the school supplies they need to be prepared for the school year but also for the school’s teachers to have extra supplies in case students lose or run out of some supplies. “We’re trying to get the kids started at the beginning of the year with all the supplies they need. Some kids are unable to provide them themselves, or their parents don’t have the means to make sure they have everything they need. So, we try to get all of the kids started at the beginning of the year with any supplies they might be missing,” said PTO Chair/Secretary Lorri Capistran. “And as the year goes along, some kids aren’t able to replenish, “I ran out of pencils, my notebooks are full, I need more paper or my colors are broken, and they’re all done.” We just try to keep supplies on hand, so if somebody is out of something, they can get them replenished right away and don’t have to wait or go without for the rest of the year.” The PTO says the drive was created during the COVID-19 pandemic for kids needing supplies for virtual classes and when they returned to in-school learning and is a way to make it so teachers don’t have to use their own money to help the students and have extras always in the classroom.

The school will be accepting all supplies that are needed in the classroom, such as:

  • Pencils and Highlighters
  • Dry Erase Markers
  • Glue Bottles and Sticks
  • Student-sized Rulers and Scissors
  • Markers and Crayons
  • Post-it Notes and Index Cards
  • Polders and Notebooks
  • Binders and Filler Paper
  • Hand Sanitizer, Kleenex, and Ziptop bags

Donations were collected during the Back-to-School Registration Day on August 18, but the school is continuing to accept donations during the Meet-the Teacher Nights and leading up to the first day of school in labeled collection boxes inside the school’s entry doors. “We’ll have boxes out again at Highland School for the Meet-the Teachers Nights coming up when you’re going to be in the school on August 31 and September 1 here at Highland,” PTO Treasurer Mary Gosse explained. “The boxes will be inside of the entry doors, and they’ll be clearly labeled for when you want to drop off any of those supplies.” “The boxes will also be available anytime the school is open. So, if you aren’t able to make it to the Meet-the-Teacher nights, you can stop by during regular office hours on Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and drop off supplies,” said Lorri Capistran.

If you cannot give any supplies to the school, the school is also accepting monetary donations that the school will use to purchase the supplies. Checks must be written out to the Highland PTO at 801 Central Ave N – Crookston, MN. If you have any questions, you can contact the Highland School Office at 218-281-5600.
