Highland Elementary School is gearing up for its annual Kindergarten Round-Up on Wednesday, April 8, from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the school.
This event is intended for children who have turned five years old by September 1, 2026. It is free for all students and parents to attend. “We’re going to have some things where we’ll have a little overview in the large group room and explore the kindergarten classrooms, take a ride on the school bus, and all that good stuff,” said Principal Chris Trostad. “So doors are open at 3:30, and then for about 15 minutes you can register. The program will start at 3:45, and the teachers will then come and take the students down to the classrooms to answer as many questions as possible about our facilities. If you haven’t registered or are not in the pre-K program at Washington, it’s really important that you come that day so we get accurate information on how many students are coming.“
Highland School staff is encouraging parents to bring their child’s original state-issued birth certificate and immunization records, and, if the child participated in Early Childhood Screening in a district other than Crookston, those records as well. The reason for bringing these documents is so the school can process them and register the children for Kindergarten as soon as possible.
Trostad said they are proud of their top-notch Kindergarten program. “We also have testimonials from parents who have had their kids in our phenomenal kindergarten program. We have a tremendous team. So I think it’s a pretty easy choice as to where to go,” said Trostad. “Seeing those testimonials and seeing our teachers and seeing our facilities, it’s just a great place. And we also have a couple of playgrounds for kids to go play on if they need to, for families while they’re working through the kindergarten roundup process.”
If you can’t make it to Kindergarten Roundup on Wednesday, April 8, Trostad said you can contact the school, and he will be happy to give a tour anytime. “They should call Highland School at (218-281-5600), and I will personally give them a tour. I give lots of tours here, and we definitely want the kids to see Highland School, see all the different parts, processes, and how it all works,” said Trostad. “We can answer any questions and get your paperwork. So do not hesitate to reach out to us. I will give you a tour on a weekend, a night, whenever it’s convenient for you. I know lots of families have different working hours. So whatever works, just let me know.”
Every student who attends will receive a free “tool kit” containing academic tools to help prepare the kids for kindergarten, such as number lines, scissors, and writing utensils.
Registration for Kindergarten Roundup begins at 3:30 p.m. (15 minutes before the start), and the program begins at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, at Highland School. You can get a free ride from the Tri-Valley Bus by calling 218-281-0700. If you can’t make it, or have any questions, call the school at 218-281-5600.
