The sixth-grade orchestra at Highland Elementary School will be putting on a pair of concerts for their classmates on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, at 2:30 p.m. The concerts will also be live-streamed on YouTube for parents and families. The video will also be available on KROXAM.COM.
Orchestra instructor Haley Ellis said she found a way to safely distance the students to perform even with COVID-19 restrictions still limiting concerts. “I was really looking for some ways to let my kids still have as normal of a year and as normal an experience as they can,” said Ellis. “Since concerts are sort of on a little hiatus right now, I figured out a way to space the orchestra kiddos in sixth-grade out, so they are safely distanced on stage and in front of the stage at Highland. We’re going to do a little concert for a couple of classes, and since we’re not really doing visitors at the elementary, we can’t really have parents come. But we’ll be live streaming it. So, this Thursday and Friday at 2:30 p.m., the sixth-graders will be putting on a spooky-themed concert.”
Many of the songs are unique twists on well-known music. “We had a lot of fun naming some of our songs,” said Ellis. “We took a lot of our favorites and made them minor for those of you who know music. So, instead of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’, we’re playing ‘Gloomy, Gloomy, Little Star’. And ‘Hot Cross Buns’ we’re playing ‘Burnt Cross Buns’, and per the students’ request we also figure out an arrangement of ‘Spooky, Scaring Skeletons’ which is a big hit with them.”
Ellis said she’s glad to be able to bring music to her students despite COVID-19 limitations. “I’m super grateful we’re able to bring as much normalcy, and music to the kids lives as we can,” said Ellis. “With everything so topsy-turvy, crazy going on, it’s nice to be able to sit back with the violin and play.”
