HOUSTON AVENUE AND ALEXANDER STREET PROJECT UPDATES

Alexander Street and Houston Ave are now available for use. Both projects are near completion as of last week.

Alexander Street recently went through a complete road reconstruction. This included the removal of the entire pre-existing road. “They took out sidewalk to sidewalk and replaced all of the surfaces,” said Utilities Director Brandon Carlson, “So it got new curbs, new black top, new street, and now it has a new sidewalk on the east side of the street.”

The water main was replaced on Alexander Street in 2022, and typically the city will reconstruct the street one year after completion to allow the road to settle during the winter months. The final step to the Alexander Street project is to install Sod next to the sidewalks. This is estimated to be completed within the next three weeks.

Houston Ave now has its new water main installed and is yet to receive a favorable bid for the road reconstruction. “Next year, it will be bid out for reconstruction, similar to Alexander,” said Carlson, “That all was designed this year. The bids came in high, so it got put on hold for a year; we’re going to try and bid that earlier this year, maybe December or January, for our street improvements and see if we can get a better price.”

Houston Ave now has six inches of asphalt and gravel mixture located in the trench, which was dug for the water main. Houston Ave will remain as is until the whole road reconstruction is in place.
