In a tale of two halves, Upper Iowa beats UMC Men’s Basketball

It was a tale of two halves. The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball team dominated the first half, but the Upper Iowa Peacocks dominated the second half and won the game 75-65 in a game played at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston. 

FIRST HALF –
UMC jumped out to a 5-2 lead with a Jordan Mitchell basket and a Reid Grant three-pointer. UMC led 9-8 when Grant scored five straight points. After a Peacock basket, Grant added a layup for a 16-10 lead seven minutes into the game. UMC led 18-14 when Christian Bowen-Webb made a three-pointer, and a little over halfway through the half, Micah Garrett made a three-pointer before Chandler Meeks added a layup for a 26-14 lead with 8:51 left in the half. Upper Iowa battled back and got within a 30-22 deficit when UMC’s Grant made a layup, and Landon Dimler added a three-pointer for a 35-22 lead.
Upper Iowa scored three points before UMC’s Grant made a layup, Bowen-Webb made a three-pointer, and Dimler added a layup for a 42-25 lead. Upper Iowa made a basket before UMC’s Grant made a shot with two seconds left in the half, and the Golden Eagles took a 44-27 lead into halftime. 

SECOND HALF –
Upper Iowa started the second half by outscoring UMC 21-8 to get within a 52-48 deficit with 12:26 remaining. UMC’s Grant scored on a layup before the Peacocks made six straight points to tie the game at 54-54. The game was tied again at 56 before Upper Iowa five more points for a 61-56 lead with six minutes left. UMC’s Grant made two free throws, but the Peacocks added four more points for a 65-58 lead. The Golden Eagles’ Bown-Webb made a three-pointer, and Grant added a free throw to get within a 65-62 deficit with 3:20 remaining. Upper Iowa responded with six straight points for a 71-62 lead with 69 seconds to go. Upper Iowa made all four free throw attempts in the final minute to win the game 75-65.

UMC drops to 1-3 on the year and will play the North Dakota State University Bison on Thursday in Fargo. Upper Iowa improves to 3-0 on the year.
