ISABEL VONESH’S FIVE THREE-POINTERS LEADS SACRED HEART TO WIN OVER WARREN-ALVARADO-OSLO

Isabel Vonesh knocked down five three-pointers, and the Sacred Heart Eagles Girl’s Basketball team played stellar defense in a 52-44 win over Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Monday night, leading the game the entire way from start to finish.

FIRST HALF –
Sacred Heart came out and Isabel Vonesh was able to knock down two early three-pointers to give the Eagles a 6-1 lead with 14:33 left in the half. After another Eagles score, the Ponies would respond and go on a 5-0 run to make it an 8-6 Eagles lead with 11:24 left in the half. Points were tough to come by for both teams in the first half as each team was stout defensively. With Sacred Heart leading 10-8 with 6:38 left in the half, Isabel Vonesh would knock down her third three-pointer of the half to start a 7-0 run forcing a Ponies timeout with 5:19 remaining, and Sacred Heart in front 17-8. W-A-O would counter with a 7-0 run of their own thanks to a three from Hannah Pederson, and two layups from Annie Pederson, and Kylie Nelson. That gave the Eagles a 17-15 edge. The two teams continued to play strong defense, and Sacred Heart was able to maintain the lead all the way through the first half into the halftime break. It looked like the Eagles were going to have a 22-18 lead at halftime, but right before the buzzer sounded Kylie Nelson was able to convert a layup inside for W-A-O, giving the Ponies some momentum at the break with Sacred Heart in front 22-20. Leading the way for Sacred Heart in the first half was Isabel Vonesh with 9 points, and likewise, for W-A-O, Hannah Pederson’s 9 points also led the way.

SECOND HALF –
Unlike the first half, the first three minutes provided lots of scoring for both teams, and Sacred Heart was able to extend their lead to 34-28, forcing a W-A-O timeout. The Ponies would respond off of the timeout and go on a 6-0 run to tie the game, but Sacred Heart would respond and Isabel Vonesh would knock down her fifth three-pointer of the game to put the Eagles back in front 37-34. The Ponies would come back and tie the game once again at 37-37, but never could take the lead, and the Eagles would go on a 6-0 run to reclaim it 43-37 thanks to back-to-back buckets from Lydia Riskey. W-A-O wouldn’t go away without a fight, and after a quick score, and three from Reegan Mortimer, they would take a timeout trialing 45-42 with 2:21 left to play, The Eagles would close the game on a 7-2 run making their free throws and taking care of the basketball, to win the game 52-44, picking up a big Section 8A victory.

Sacred Heart improves to 8-6 with the win. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo falls to 7-9 with the loss.
