John Richard Garry – Obit

John Richard Garry, 88, a longtime Euclid, MN farmer, passed away Friday afternoon, June 2, 2023, at Woodside Village, Grand Forks, ND where he had been in residence since April 18th.

John was born on February 10, 1935, in Crookston, MN, the son of John S. Garry and Anne Beller Garry.  He grew up in St. Paul, MN and attended Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1953. John later enlisted in the Army National Guard of Minnesota and served until his honorable discharge to the US Army Reserve in June of 1961.

John was united in marriage to Marilyn A. “Lynn” Bartz, on December 27, 1958, in Crookston, MN.  Their union would be blessed by the births of Patrick, Michael, Michelle, and Barbara.  In October of 1961, John was called to active duty with the US Army and stationed at Fort Lewis, WA until August 1962. Lynn and Patrick were able to join him in Tacoma and Michael was born there.  The couple farmed in the Euclid area for over fifty years.  Sadly, Lynn passed away on May 1, 2014.

For the past few years, John has shared a friendship with Sharon Driscoll and they enjoyed spending time together while creating many cherished memories.  John was a lifetime farmer and served on the Fanny Township Board for over nine years while also working as a crop adjuster for close to ten years.  John’s easy-going personality and knack for telling tall tales was beloved by many.  His love and loyalty to family and friends is his enduring legacy.

In addition to Lynn, his beloved wife of fifty-five years; John was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law, Alfred and Gladys Bartz.

John is lovingly survived by his four children and their families; two sons, Patrick Garry of Grand Forks, ND; Michael Garry and wife Kit Brady, of Minneapolis, MN and their daughters, Hannah of Decorah, IA and Caroline of Minneapolis; and two daughters, Michelle Tack and her children, Bradley, Nathan and Ashley of Salt Lake City, UT; Barbara and husband Jerry Ward, of Minnetrista, MN. and their children, Samantha of London, England and Riley of Dallas,TX. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Judy Dugan and husband, Dan, of Ventura, CA; extended family; and many friends.  Blessed be the memory of John Richard Garry.

Mass of Christian Burial for John Garry will be celebrated at 3:00 PM, Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks, MN, with Msgr. Michael Foltz, presiding.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service.  The Mass will be livestreamed by going to John’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view.  Messages of condolence to the family may be offered on the website as well.  The Graveside Service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Crookston, MN, at 6 PM.
