John Tvedt – OBIT

John Tvedt, age 75, of Mentor, MN, passed away on Friday, October 6th, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13th, at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor, with the Rev. Michael Sletto officiating. Interment will be in Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Mentor. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Vanderwaal-Lusty American Legion Post #421 of Mentor and the National Guard Honors Team. The service will be recorded and available later in the day on Friday on the Carlin website. Arrangements are with the Carlin Family Funeral Service of Erskine, and messages of condolence may be shared at www.carlinfuneral.com.

John Leo Tvedt was born on July 6, 1948, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, to parents Henry, Jr. and Rose (Cook) Tvedt. He grew up in Red Lake Falls and attended the Red Lake Falls school. He entered the United States Army in November of 1967 and served in Vietnam as a chemical equipment repairman as part of the 99th Evac Unit. He received his honorable discharge in July of 1969 and returned home.

John was united in marriage to Mary Sveningson on October 4, 1975, at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor. To this union, one son, Jonathan, was born, and they lived south of Mentor.

During his working years, John worked as a long-haul trucker for Bach Trucking of Thief River Falls, Lake Valley Trucking of Wheaton, Minnesota for over 20 years, and most recently for Marlin Iverson hauling grain. Due to his lung cancer that originated from Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam, he was forced to retire.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Vanderwaal-Lusty American Legion Post #421 of Mentor. John had the well-deserved honor of being asked to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in September of 2022, an experience that he was able to share with his wife, Mary.

John loved little children. He showed his love by gentle teasing and giving them treats. As he wrote himself, when he was not on the road, his greatest joy was being with his family.

John passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, October 6, 2023, at his home at the age of 75 years.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary, of Mentor; one son, Jonathan, of Mentor; brothers, Henry, Jr. (Florence) Tvedt of Plummer, MN and Kenneth Tvedt of Wrenshal, MN; sisters-in-law, Joyce (Dean) Cooley of Santa Rosa, CA, and Darlene Tvedt of Grand Rapids, MN; brother-in-law, Orval Sveningson of Mentor and Mark Sveningson of Carbondale, IL. Nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe, Jim, Ole, and infant brother, Jerome, and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Tvedt and Linda Tvedt.
