Joyce Sannes – Obit

Joyce M. Sannes, 92, Crookston, MN, formerly of Fertile, MN passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, under hospice care at Riverview Memory Care Center in Crookston.

Joyce Margaret Bakke was born on November 8, 1929, along with her twin sister, Grace, at their home near Winger, MN, daughter of Marie (Krogstad) and John Bakke. She grew up on a farm with 4 brothers and 2 sisters and attended Wooded Park School. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.

Joyce married Ordean (O.B.) Christianson in 1948. They lived in Silver Bay, MN where they started their family. They later moved to the Bennie Christianson family farm in Bear Park Township. Raising their five children near family allowed them to attend and host many family events. They were active members of Norman Lutheran Church. A day didn’t go by that Joyce wasn’t busy providing a loving home for her children. She also worked many years reupholstering furniture along with working various jobs in the area.

Joyce met Norman Sannes and they married in 1983 at Concordia Lutheran Church, where she then became a member. They enjoyed playing cards, dancing, weaving rugs, gardening, and especially entertaining family and friends in their home.

Joyce kept busy sewing, quilting at the church, doing crafts, baking, making lefse, cooking and canning. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She was a genuine, caring, and loyal lady who would keep you on your toes and always make you smile. No matter the time of day, anyone who visited her did not leave without a hot cup of coffee (even if you didn’t drink coffee) and a bite to eat.

After Norman’s passing in 2006, Joyce continued to live in Fertile until 2017 when she moved to Riverview Memory Care Center.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Keith (Donna) Christianson of Mentor, and David (Sue) Christianson of Erskine; daughters, Diane Christianson of Crookston, and Leanne (Mike) Novacek of Warren; grandchildren & their families, Jerami (Peter) Sullivan and their children, Maclain & Hollan; Kyle (Katie) Sulerud and their boys, Bryce, Davin & Parker; Tyler (Adelle) Christianson and their boys, Jack, Gus & Bjorn; Blake (Brittany) Christianson and their boys, Cruze, Corbin & Colt; Reid (Laura) Christianson and their girls, Sylvia, Carol & Eliza; Tanner (Erin) Christianson; Sydney Olson; and Jessica Olson and Macey Novacek; stepsons, Dennis (Rosiland) Sannes of Gary, Duane Sannes of Fertile, Richard (Susan) Sannes of Gary, Rodney (LaVonne) Sannes of Gary, and Jerry (Alethe) Sannes of Denison, TX; stepdaughters, Renee (Carl) Olson of Gary, Julie (Roger) Wenschlag of Audubon, and Brenda (Gordon) Mitchell, of Moorhead; stepson-in-law, Doug Carlson of Bagley; along with many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; daughter, Adrienne Sulerud (2009); her parents; sisters, Olga Osmondson and Grace Peterson; brothers, Orton, Walter, Melvin, and Leonard; stepson, Jeffrey Sannes (2000); and stepdaughter, Sharon Carlson (2017).

Joyce’s family would like to thank the Riverview Memory Care Center for the friendship, security, and the loving care Joyce was given while she lived there. Thanks also, to the Red River Valley Hospice and Pastor Phil Larsen for their kindness and support.
