LeRoy James Chandler – Obit

LeRoy James Chandler, 93, Grand Forks, died peacefully in his home, Sunday, December 19, 2021

LeRoy was born May 2, 1928, in Caledonia ND, the son of Arthur and Mary (Smith) Chandler. He attended school and graduated from Caledonia in 1947. LeRoy joined the U.S. Navy and fought in the Korean War aboard the USS Missouri BB-63 until his discharge as a Petty Officer 2nd Class, 4 years to the day on October 10, 1951. He married the love of his life, Deloris Halstad, on November 10, 1951. Together they raised 4 children.

They began their married life in Hillsboro, ND where LeRoy worked for Arnie Sorum/Standard Oil bulk delivery until 1956.  They moved to Devils Lake, ND where he worked for Lawrence Moore/Standard Oil bulk delivery until 1958.  Nielsville, MN became their family home where LeRoy owned and operated his own bulk delivery business for Mobil Oil Corporation until he sold his business to the Shelly Co-op Creamery in 1978.  He worked for the Creamery until his retirement in 1991.  In 2006, they moved from Nielsville to Grand Forks, ND where they continued to enjoy their retirement and grandchildren. Deloris passed away on Sept. 13, 2012.

LeRoy was a member at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Nielsville, MN for over 63 years where he served on the Church Council for many years.  He was the 2nd oldest member of the Hubbard Post American Legion Club #336 in Nielsville, MN.

LeRoy lived for and loved his family deeply. He is survived by 1 son, Brian (Jill) Chandler, Grand Forks: 1 daughter, Terri (Rob) Heggie, Crookston, MN; Grandchildren, Chanda (Mike) Anderson, Keith Chandler, both of Livingston, MT; Tiffany (Gary) Ouellette, East Grand Forks, MN; Andie (John) Gage, Lincoln NE, Tessa (Aaron) Jollow, Okinawa Japan, Aleece Chandler, Grand Forks, ND; Brooke Heggie, Butte, MT; 8 Great Grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Ralph Chandler of Twin Valley, MN, and sister-in-law, Gladys Chandler or Portland, ND.

He was preceded in death by sons Stewart Chandler and Jamie Chandler; grandson Russell Brummond, brothers Adrian (Bud), Wayne, Edwin (Teddy), and his only sister, Mona Mae Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Riverside Christian School, East Grand Forks, MN.

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Monday, December 27, 2021, in Dahl Funeral Home, East Gand Forks, MN.

Visitation: 12 Noon – 2 pm.

Interment with Military Honors: St. Petri Cemetery, Nielsville, MN in the spring of 2022
