Lorraine M. Millard – OBIT

Lorraine M. Millard, 96, of Crookston, MN, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN.

Lorraine Mary Christy was born on January 19, 1928, in Sheboygan, WI, the daughter of Clair James and Agnes Christine (Scheffer) Christy.  She attended grade school until the fifth grade at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School in Sheboygan, WI.   The family moved to Crookston, MN, in 1939, where she attended High School at the Cathedral.  While World War II was going on, Lorraine and her best friend Mary volunteered for the American Red Cross, where she knitted scarves for the troops.  Lorraine met Charles Millard after the war, and they were united in marriage on September 4, 1944, at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Crookston, MN.  Three sons were born to this union: Arthur, Charles, and Ken.  Charles worked for Otter Tail Power Co., and Lorraine was a stay-at-home mother.  She loved gardening, canning, and baking.  Together, they loved camping, playing golf, and traveling.  After the boys were through high school, she reached for her dreams.  With Charles and the boys behind her, she entered St. Frances School of Practical Nursing and graduated. She worked as a general duty and then physical therapy nurse at St. Frances Hospital until it closed.  Charles Sr. was transferred to Milbank, SD, and she then worked at Whetstone Valley Care Center in Milbank, SD, in Physical Therapy until Charles passed away in 1993.

Lorraine returned to Crookston, MN, and started working with the Foster Grandparent Program at Washington School. She then moved to Nielsville, MN, and worked at the Climax Foster Grandparent Program. She received the Lighthouse Award in 2012. She had been with the Foster Grandparent Program for 20 years when illness took over, and she had to give up a job she loved so much.

Family members who survive Lorraine include her sons, Arthur of Minden, NV, and Ken of Crookston, MN; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and sisters Carol and Pat, along with a brother, Richard.

She is preceded in death by her parents Clair and Agnes; her husband Charles Millard Sr.; son, Charles Millard Jr.; brothers James Christy, Mickey Christy; sister, Jean Lyngholm and daughters-in-law Norma Millard and Marjean Millard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Villa St. Vincent Chapel.
