He attended the local country School (District 91), graduating from Gary High School in 1948. Lowell enrolled in NDSU and joined the Air National Guard. During his college years, he joined the Air Force. After completion of his tour of duty, Lowell returned to complete his degree in Vocational Agriculture at NDSU. Lowell taught Vocational High School Agriculture in Plumer, Minn. and Herman, Minn. before coming to Ada in 1960, where he taught until his retirement in 1987. He had a deep commitment to his FFA members and educating his students about farming. In 1965, Lowell married Borgie Sandvik at St. Petri Church in Nielsville, Minn. They lived in Ada and taught at Ada High School. Two children were born to Lowell and Borgie – Larry and Kristen.

In his retirement, Lowell planted and raised Christmas trees, strawberries, and raspberries, along with other crops. One of his greatest enjoyments was planting and harvesting.
