Luella A. Digerness – Obit

Luella A. Digerness, 93, Moorhead, MN, formerly of Gary, MN, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead.

Luella Ann Eid was born on February 6, 1929, to Anton and Lena (Duckstad) Eid in rural Gary, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in Sundal Lutheran Church. Luella married Harris Digerness on March 18, 1951, and was a Navy wife for nineteen months until Harris was discharged in October of 1952.

Luella’s education included her elementary years spent in a country school in rural Gary, then graduating from Gary High School in 1947. She earned her associate degree in education in 1951, from what was then Moorhead State Teachers’ College. She then earned her bachelor’s degree and her master’s degree from Michigan State University. All of Luella’s degrees were in education. Her teaching career included two years in rural MN prior to completion of her associate degree, and nearly seventeen years at Holt Public Schools in Holt Michigan. Luella worked as an elementary substitute teacher for Holt Public Schools prior to earning her bachelor’s degree. After retirement to Florida, she did substitute work for the Lee County School District.

Following her marriage, she worked in a number of offices for several years until the birth of her son Wade. She then became a stay-at-home mom until he was a second-grader. With one exception, when she returned to office work for 11 months when their son was a preschooler.

In 1984 they retired to Florida where she and Harris resumed their volunteer church work. Luella became active in the Lee County chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), serving first as a secretary, then as a president.

In 1995, Harris passed away. Five years later she and Wade moved from Florida to Moorhead, MN.

Luella loved to do volunteer work for her church and the NAMI organization, travel, read, and do creative writing. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Moorhead and both national and MN NAMI chapters.

Luella is survived by her son, Wade Digerness, Moorhead, MN; nephews, Keith (Mary) Gohdes, Mapleton, ND, and Rev. Stephen (Heidi) Gohdes, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; nieces, Denise (Joe) Huebsch, St. Cloud, MN, Kathleen Gohdes, Pelican Rapids, MN, Melanie Fransen, Shorewood, MN and Michelle (Todd) Christiansen, Sartell, MN; and many great and great-great nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Sylvia Gohdes, and Diana Olson; brother, Donald Eid, and two young brothers who passed during infancy and childhood.

Funeral: 2:00 PM, Friday, April 8, 2022, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN.

Visitation: One hour before the funeral at the church.

Interment: Sundal Lutheran Cemetery, Gary, MN. (At a later date)
