MANKATO USES 8-RUN INNING TO BEAT UMC BASEBALL

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team took a 5-0 lead, but the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks scored eight runs in the eighth inning for an 8-5 victory in the final game of the three-game series.

FIRST INNING
UMC started the game with a Sawyer Satrom (Soph. Portland, ND) single. The next three batters were retired. Mankato was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. 

SECOND INNING
UMC’s Teddy Giefer (Sr. Courtland) walked to lead off the inning before the next three batters were retired. Mankato was retired in 1-2-3 fashion again.

THIRD INNING
UMC’s leadoff batter lined out before Satrom walked. Caden Headlee (Jr. Fargo, ND) reached on a fielder’s choice while Satrom was out at second base. Jake Dykhoff (Soph. Wadena) doubled, and Jake Hjelle (Sr. East Grand Forks) singled to score two runs, and UMC led 2-0. Mankato was retired in 1-2-3 fashion for the third straight inning.

FOURTH INNING
With one out, Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) singled, Mitch Goodwin (Sr. Prior Lake) walked, and Kobe Senn (Soph. Fargo, ND) singled to load the bases. A run scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. After a ground out, Headlee reached on an error, and two runs scored for a 5-0 lead. After a pitching change, UMC was retired. For the fourth straight inning, Mankato was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. 

FIFTH INNING
The first two UMC batters were retired before Kodi Miller (Jr. Grand Rapids) walked and Danny Wensloff singled. The next batter was retired. Mankato was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.

SIXTH INNING
UMC’s Senn singled before the next three batters were retired. Mankato’s first batter grounded out before the Mavericks got their first hit of the game with a double, but later, he was retired. After a walk and a single, the next batter lined out, and UMC led 5-0 through six innings.

SEVENTH INNING
UMC’s Hjelle singled, and Giefer walked before the next three batters were retired.  The Mavericks started the inning with a ground out and a single. The next batter reached on an error. After a fielder’s choice, the next batter grounded out, and the Mavericks were retired.

EIGHTH INNING
The first UMC batter struck out before Satrom singled. The next two batters were retired. Mankato’s first two batters were hit by a pitch, forcing UMC to make a pitching change. The next batter flew out to right field allowing a run to score to get within a 5-1 deficit. The next batter reached on an error, allowing another run to score. The next Maverick batter doubled to score two more runs to get within a 5-4 deficit. A single tied the game at 5-5, and UMC made another pitching change. The next batter struck out before a three-run home run, and Mankato took an 8-5 lead going into the final inning.

NINTH INNING
UMC’s Hjelle was hit by a pitch, but the next three batters were retired, and Mankato won the game 8-5 to take one game out of the three-game series.

UMC drops to 25-13 overall and 19-8 in the NSIC and will travel to St. Cloud State on Wednesday. Minnesota State Mankato improves to 25-14 overall and 21-8 in the NSIC.
