Mavis Arvidson – OBIT

Mavis Arvidson of Red Lake Falls, MN passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 surrounded by her loving family at Villa St. Vincent in Cookston, MN.

Funeral service for Mavis will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Alllen Bertilrud, Synod Authorized Minister officiating. Burial will be held at Immanuel Cemetery, Wylie Township, near Red Lake Falls, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Mavis Carol Schultz was born on August 18, 1933 to Erdmann & Elsie Schultz on the family farm in Louisville Township. Mavis was baptized September 10, 1933 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wylie, MN and confirmed on April 18, 1948 at the same church. Mavis attended Black River School through 8th grade, a one room schoolhouse in Wylie Township. She graduated from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls in 1951.

During Mavis’s adolescent years, she was active in Walther League through her church and Red Lake Falls City Softball. At school, she was active in basketball, choir, and the High School Paper Staff. She also taught Sunday School and was a church organist.

Mavis worked in the clerical/accounting field at Hunt Brothers Hardware, was Secretary to the Superintendent at Lafayette High School, worked Medical Records at St John’s Hospital and Medical Records & Insurance Clerk at the Red Lake Falls Clinic, worked at the Office of the Red Lake County Treasurer, and was bookkeeper at the Vocational Center, retiring in 1990.

While working at the High School, Mavis met Roger Arvidson, the new handsome Science Teacher in town. They married on June 9th, 1956 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wylie, MN. They were married for 31 wonderful years.

Roger and Mavis were active in their community including their instrumental role in establishing the Red Lake Falls Volunteer Ambulance Association which is still active today. They enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States and Canada.  They were fortunate to spend summers with their family at their cabin on Blanche Lake, near Battle Lake, MN, even though Mavis never learned to swim!

Mavis was always a busy lady, always on the go.  She volunteered for the Hospital & Hillcrest Nursing Home Auxiliaries, was active at Bethany Lutheran Church with Bible Studies, Circle, WELCA, Church Treasurer & Church Council. She was on the board of RSVP and the Committee on Aging for Red Lake County and was on the board of the Red Lake County American Cancer Society. Mavis was a Dial-A-Ride driver and also delivered meals for the Senior Nutrition Center.

Mavis loved baking and her grandchildren loved her Christmas cookies! Mavis was an avid quilter and made a special quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. Mavis loved watching the MN Twins games. One of her favorite activities was playing bridge which she played for over 68 years. She was an original member of the current group of ladies that began playing over 55 years ago. The group played weekly no matter rain, snow or shine; they’re a special group of ladies! Mavis and Roger also played couples bridge in the earlier years of their marriage.

Mavis is survived by her children Bruce (Betty) Arvidson of Crookston, MN, Mark (Lynn) Arvidson of Eden Prairie, MN, Janelle (Scott) Guzek of Farmington, MN; grandchildren Kristin (Chris) Cavanaugh, Brenda Arvidson, Jake (Ashley) Arvidson, Jenna Arvidson & fiancé Diego Munoz-Plata, Kylie Arvidson & boyfriend Brady Miller, Alyssa Guzek, Breanna (Cory) Giebel, Kaitlyn (Josh) Taylor, along with several nieces and nephews.

Mavis is preceded in death by her parents Erdmann & Elsie Schultz, husband Roger, infant granddaughter Kayla Arvidson, sisters Bernice Schuhmacher, Ellen Weiss Wieland and brother Arley Schultz; brother in-laws Delbert Schuhmacher, Richard Weiss & Kenny Wieland; sister in-laws Verna Schultz, Pat Schultz and Irene Schultz.
