MEET THE 2022 CROOKSTON CITY COUNCIL AT-LARGE CANDIDATES

The Crookston Area Chamber held its Candidate Forum on Tuesday night to allow the public to hear from the current candidates for the open spots for the Crookston Public School Board, Crookston City Council, Polk County Commissioners, State Representative District 1B, and State Senator District 1. The forum was moderated by Crookston Area Chamber Executive Director Mark Landa and Monica Custritz of the University of Minnesota Crookston. The forum had the candidates introduce themselves to the audience and answer two questions submitted by the public, then give a closing statement to the public.

The candidates running for Crookston City Council Member At-Large seat are Lane DeVoge and Tim Menard. We asked each candidate why they are running and what they hoped to do if elected.

Q: Why are you running?

Lane DeVoge: I want to see change in this community, infrastructure change, change overall, freshen up things, and make sure that Crookston can be a city that we’re all proud of and that we can do this together, and we all have a voice.

Tim Menard: I was the beneficiary of the generosity of this community when my home was flooded this past spring. This would be a small way for me to give back to this community that has supported my family during a very critical period.

Q: What are you hoping to accomplish if you are elected as a council member?

DeVoge: I would love to see more affordable housing and better sidewalks. A big joke at my house is we don’t have a rolling trash can, so I’ll be looking to lower costs for that. Help make better roads, help people shop local, and find out what we can do to keep people local instead of going to neighboring communities or states to get the things that they need.

Menard: There are some things that I would like to be improved. I think that we do have some issues with deferred maintenance of several infrastructure projects, and I would like to see the three neighborhoods that are still having flood risk issues addressed for community safety. I would also like to be a part of the process that helps to audit what our Public Works infrastructure maintenance issues need to be addressed. In particular, our sanitary source systems. So many of our households experienced sewage backups before the flood events in the spring. So, there are some issues there that I would like to be a part of the solution.
