The candidates running for Crookston City Council in Wards 2 and 6 are running unopposed. Steve Erickson, the incumbent, is running in Ward 2. Cindy Gjerswold is running for her first term in Ward 6. We asked each candidate to introduce themselves and why they are running.
Q: Would you please tell us about yourself?
Steve: I’m married to Laurie Erickson. I have two kids Nate and Riley. Riley is a nurse in ER, Nate farms for a farmer just north of here. I’ve been on the council for four years, ending my term right now so, up for re-election. [I’ve] enjoyed serving the community for the next for years and hope I can do bigger and better the next four.
Cindy: I work here in Crookston with Tri-Valley Transportation as operations manager. I am married to my husband Darrin, we’ve been married 24 years. I have one son Andy, who graduated from the university here in Crookston this spring. I’ve lived in Crookston all my life, graduated from Mount St. Benedict [in] 1980. I do have some college background, did not graduate from college, but [from the] school of hard knocks. I’ve worked with my mom and dad in our family business since 1958 in Crookston.
Q: Why are you running?
Steve:The first four years there is a lot of learning. There is a lot that goes into this and what goes on. I just think now that [with] the information I’ve gained and what I’ve learned I can do hopefully do bigger and better things the next four.
Cindy: I want to run for city council because I think some things need to be changed. I wanted to see the council get along and right now I don’t see a lot of working together. I feel that my business background would be a benefit to the council. I’m a very conservative person and I want to be able to spend the taxpayer dollars wisely.
Q: Anything you would like to add?
Steve: I just hope that people appreciate what I do for the community and the city of Crookston.
Cindy: I appreciate everybody that’s going to be coming out and voting. And thank you for the opportunity to serve you.
STEVE ERICKSON CINDY GJERSWOLD
