Mildred E. Matthys – Obit

Mildred E. Matthys, 85, of Halstad, MN passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Halstad Living Center, Halstad, MN, surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice.

Mildred Edith Jensen was born on February 13, 1935 to Sophus and Gertrude Jensen of Moorhead, MN. Mildred grew up on several small farmsteads in rural Clay County before the family was able to settle on a farmstead along the Red River of the North, in Oak Port Township.

She met the love of her life, Leo Frederick Matthys, while roller skating and attending dances at Johnson Rink in Moorhead. Leo entered the United States Army during the Korean War. On April 26, 1954 she married Leo in Fargo, ND.

Mildred worked at Avid Benson in Moorhead while Leo was in the Army. They made their forever home on her parents home site. Together they built their home and raised 6 children. After raising her children, Mildred returned to work at Ben Franklin at the Northport Shopping Center in North Fargo, in the fabric department for many years. Her pastimes included her love of sewing, canning, and baking. She also enjoyed camping with Leo and attending old time tractor shows and events in Minnesota and North Dakota. Traveling became a yearly event by taking tourist bus trips with friends.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Sophus and Gertrude Jensen; husband, Leo Matthys; and son, Donald Lee Matthys.
