The shape of Minnesota will be represented in our new state flag. The State Emblems Redesign Commission chose F1953 as the base design, pending modifications that may include the shape of Minnesota, the number and color of stripes, and the star.
The Commission will consider new mockups at its next meeting, which will be in hybrid format Tuesday, December 19 at 9 am. A Zoom link to view the meeting will be posted on the Commission’s website (www.mnhs.org/serc).
The State Emblems Redesign Commission was established in the 2023 legislative session to develop and adopt a new design for the official state seal and a new design for the official state flag no later than January 1, 2024.
Andrew Prekker of Luvurne designed the flag and explained what each item on the flag means –
The blue shape on the left is in shape of the state of Minnesota. The star inside represents the North Star (North Star state). As for the stripes: White = Winter & Snow. Green = Farmland & Forests. Blue = Lakes & Rivers.
As outlined in state legislation, the Minnesota Historical Society is providing administrative support to the State Emblems Redesign Commission.
