Minot State handles UMC Women’s Basketball

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s basketball team’s struggles continued as the Minot State Beavers cruised to an 84-53 NSIC victory in Minot, North Dakota.

FIRST QUARTER –
The first quarter saw the near nonexistence of offense in the first 6:20, as UMC had a 5-4 lead all the way until there was 3:40 remaining in the quarter. That is when the offense opened up, with Minot State taking a 9-7 lead on a three from Taryn Hamling, one of many she would hit in this contest. UMC retook the lead on two Emma Miller (Sr, Albertville) free throws, and from there the teams would exchange points until the end of the quarter, where Jaime Skeggs hit a three to put the Beavers up 18-15 at the end of the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER –
Minot State hit an early 3-pointer to open the quarter, but Halle Winjum (Soph, Crookston) and Anna Westby (Fr, Eveleth) each hit buckets to cut the lead down to 1, at 21-20. Westby and MSU’s Maya Vibeto then exchanged threes before UMC had a scoreless span of 3:40, and that allowed the Beavers to go up by double digits, at 33-23. After Westby scored again to cut the lead to 8, the Beavers had a response, and went on an 8-0 run, hitting two threes in that span, resulting in the Beavers shooting 10/24 from beyond the arch in the second quarter. Westby would hit yet another 3-pointer with 59 seconds remaining in the half, and that would be the final bucket of the half for either side, meaning that the Beavers would take a 41-28 lead into the locker room for halftime.

THIRD QUARTER –
Anna Westby and Halle Winjum continued their good games, scoring the first 5 points for the Golden Eagles, cutting the lead down to 9 at 43-34. Then, Westby hit yet another 3-pointer to cut the lead down to 45-37, but that was a little too close for comfort for the Beavers, and they responded in kind with a 14-0 run, including two more threes from Taryn Hamilng, and all of a sudden the Beavers pulled ahead to a 59-37 lead. Westby scored her 20th and final point of her night to snap the run, which was a career high for her, but the Beavers responded with 5 more points to take a 64-39 lead with 3:51 to go in the quarter. From there, neither team would score until there was 2:03 left, as Emma Miller and Rayna Klejeski (Jr, Barnum) scored layups, but another 3-pointer in the final minute gave the Beavers a 67-43 lead with one quarter left to play.

FOURTH QUARTER –
Minot State had a comfortable lead to start the 4th, and that would continue, as the UMC offense struggled to get anything going, only scoring 10 points in the entire quarter. Klejeski made a layup and Winjum nailed her third 3-pointer of the game in the first two minutes of the quarter, but the Golden Eagles would only score 5 points in the final eight minutes of the quarter. For Minot State, they got some more production out of their bench, which outscored UMC’s bench 27-7 in the game. The final points for the Golden Eagles in this game came from two MIller free throws and a three-point play from Brynlea Mahlen (Soph, Fosston), but the Beavers were able to cruise to an 84-53 win.

Crookston falls to 1-9 on the season, 0-5 in the NSIC. Minot State is now 6-6, 3-2 in the NSIC.
