Morris Eugene Haugen – OBIT

Morris Eugene Haugen, 85, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on Sunday, August 11, 2024.  He was born the only boy out of four children, on January 31, 1939, in Erskine, MN, to adoring parents, Anton and Margaret (Olson) Haugen.

Growing up, Morris attended Erskine school and completed his education with a GED.  Morris loved being outdoors, a passion he developed early on in life, spending much of his time fishing.  As he grew older, his love for the outdoors grew too, if he wasn’t fishing you could find him squirrel hunting, deer hunting, or coon hunting.

On August 22, 1959, Morris married the love of his life, Sharon Wiberg at Rodnes Church in Erskine.  The couple spent 65 happy years together, many of which were lived in Crookston, where the couple settled shortly after marrying.  The two welcomed and raised ten children together, 7 boys and 3 girls.  Sadly, in April of 2005, their son Jeremy passed away.  During this difficult time, the couple leaned on one another and set an example of what walking through a difficult situation together looked like.  They also showed their children what true love meant and how it was expressed by the way they treated each other every year they got to spend together.  Every day, Morris told Sharon she was beautiful or complimented her in some way, even up to his last day.  One of the couple’s favorite memories together, was a cruise they took with their son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Diane.

For much of his life, Morris worked as a farmhand and spent his free time playing cards and dominos.  To say he had a passion for old cars would be an understatement, he had the keen ability to take one quick look at a car and know the exact make, year, and model.  But his favorite of all the classics, was a Ford, in spite of his family’s distain for them, he stayed true to himself and was a Ford man throughout his life.  When he wasn’t thinking about cars, Morris could be found sitting outside of his apartment, in the sun, with his wife Sharon, just simply spending time with her.  If they weren’t sitting out in the yard, then the couple was off on a drive around town.  Morris loved watching his TV shows, such as Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and Let’s Make a Deal.  He was known for his happy-go-lucky nature and was always smiling.  Morris never complained, even after his cancer diagnosis, he never said a negative word; all he asked was to be at home with his family.  His daughter, Sheila, stayed and lived with them and was a godsend for the family, she put her life on hold to care for her and her siblings’ father every moment until his last breath, time she will always be grateful she was given with Morris.  Even though he was kind of quiet, Morris could also be a spitfire at the same time.  One sure way to fire him up, was to call him “Renae”, which he also loved at the same time because it was an inside joke that he shared with his family.  Morris shared most of his life with his family, he would light up every time his grandkids came to visit and absolutely adored each and every single one of them.  He took his kids squirrel and coon hunting, instilling the same love for the outdoors in them that he had himself.  His family will always remember the time they spent with Morris playing cribbage and pinochle, dominoes, and simply just spending time together around the table.  Morris was not only loved by his family but shared many friendships throughout his life; he loved when his friends Kenny and MaryAnn would come back to Minnesota to visit with him and Sharon and play cards.  Morris will be remembered as the remarkable, loving, kind, and gentle man that he was.

May God Bless the memory of Morris Eugene Haugen.
