NORTHERN FREEZE DOMINATE THE BOARDS IN WIN OVER CLIMAX-FISHER GIRL’S BASKETBALL IN SECTION 8A TOURNAMENT

The Climax-Fisher Knights Girl’s Basketball team got into foul trouble and gave up too many offensive rebounds in a 65-41 loss to the Northern Freeze in the Section 8A Girl’s Basketball Tournament.

FIRST HALF –
The storyline early on was both teams’ defenses. The Freeze were able to get a couple of buckets to take a 4-2 lead, but the Knights would respond with a slow 8-0 run to go in front 10-4 and force a Freeze timeout with 9:45 remaining in the half. Claire Erickson started the run with a three, and Peyton Hoffman scored the other five for Climax-Fisher. The momentum started to shift and the Freeze would start to pick up the pace offensively and use their full-court pressure to turn the Knights over. The Northern Freeze would rattle off a 24-8 run to go in front 28-18 and another big reason why is because Peyton Hoffman and Halle Reitmeier were both sitting on the bench for Climax-Fisher with 3 fouls each. Offensive rebounds were also playing a big role for the Freeze’s success in the opening half. With the Knights needing somewhere to turn to for points, junior Ava Larson would be the one who would step up. She would score four straight points and after a Freeze free throw, Sarah Thoreson would knock down a jump shot and the Knights would end the first half on a 6-1 run, cutting the Northern Freeze lead to 29-24 going into the halftime break. The Freeze got 10 points in the first half from Rylie Klopp and 8 apiece from Kadence Augustine and Addison Bakke. For the Knights it was Peyton Hoffman with 8 points and Claire Erickson who chipped in 6 to lead the way.

SECOND HALF –
It was a perfect start to the half for the Northern Freeze as they went on a 7-0 run to start things off, and in total, a 14-4 run to take a 43-28 lead forcing a Knights timeout with 12:28 left in the game. The Freeze continued to play well and the Knights had no answer as they continued to give up offensive rebounds and turn the ball over. They would build the lead all the way up to 49-29 and force another Knights timeout with 9:33 remaining. Claire Erickson would sink a layup off the timeout, but the Freeze got four more points and led 53-31. Climax-Fisher would manage to get the score down to 56-37 with about five minutes left in the game, and Hoffman along with Erickson continued to play well. That would be as close as the score would get, however, and the Freeze would go on to win the game by a final score of 65-41, ending the Knights season.

Climax-Fisher ends their season with a final record of 9-18. They will lose just one senior as Mollie Olson will graduate in the spring, but everyone else will return. The Northern Freeze improve to 10-16 and will now take on top-seeded Badger/Greenbush-Middle River in the next round on Thursday night.
