The Crookston Park Board met Tuesday and received an update on summer programming. Parks and Recreation Supervisor Scott Butt said, “We just wanted to let them know we plan to be as normal as we possibly can. Try to get everybody back to normal, whatever normal is, back to that and get the kids in as many activities as possible. Just wanted the Park Board to know where we stand with that.”
All the programs are scheduled to return with new offerings to include adult co-ed and men’s sand volleyball, as explained (here). After being canceled last fall, youth football is being held this spring. “They start tonight (Monday night), and it will be a three-week season,” said Butt. “There is still time for somebody to sign up if they missed it. They will go for three weeks here in May, and then we will shut it down. All the communities that normally are in the fall thought it would be good to come back and do it this spring since we weren’t able to do it last fall. It looks like we have a decent number of kids, right around 18. If anybody still wants to signup, they can get a hold of us down at City Hall.”
The location for football has also moved this year. “We are doing it a little different this year as far as putting it out at Ecklund Complex because we can play out on diamond one and use the lights if practices need those,” said Butt. “We’ve got bathroom facilities close. We thought we’d try that this year and see how it worked.”
Butt also told the board that youth baseball had received a donation from Brost and Chevrolet again this year. “I think it’s six years now that Brost has done this youth Chevy baseball package, and we just are greatly, greatly appreciative of them,” said Butt. “They do this every year and save us so much money and help us out so much. We really thank Brost, and it’s nice to have the support they give us. I know the kids appreciate it, and it’s a wonderful thing of them to do.”
After struggling to find staff last summer after initially canceling programs, Butt said they’re working on filling out the positions but still need candidates for a few summer program coordinators. “We’re looking for a youth baseball coordinator, a softball coordinator, and a tennis coordinator,” said Butt. “We are still searching for those, so if you know of anybody interested, we’d be more than happy to meet with them and talk with them.”
City Administrator Amy Finch also said they are getting close to presenting a resolution to the Crookston City Council to go out for design for the RV Campground in Central Park, and that she’d have more information following a meeting Tuesday morning.
