The Crookston Parks and Recreation board met in the City Hall council chambers on Monday afternoon.
With Summer Recreation wrapping up, the board members wanted to recap the summer activities and overall thoughts on the past few months. “With all the activities we offered this year, between the coaches, supervisors, and the people working in the parks with the maintenance side, I just thought they did a fantastic job,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Jake Solberg. Solberg stated that he heard very few complaints over the summer from parents or staff.
“It seemed like a lot of kids had smiles on their faces, and parents were happy with how things ran,” said Solberg. “Grandmas and grandpas, we’re excited to go see their grandchildren play tennis or whatever activities they may be. So overall, I think it was a good summer.
It is reported that Crookston Parks and Rec had 490 to 500 total participants in summer rec.
The Crookston public pool has had its issues this summer, and as of last week, the staff ran into another. This past week there was yet another leak from a pipe in the boiler room and chemical imbalances. The leak is now fixed, and Park and Rec staff had to handle the inequalities themselves. “The chlorine did fluctuate up and down, and with that, we had to shut the pool down,” said Solberg. “There was a lot of backwashing the pool; we had to drain the pool about a foot to two feet so the back washing could clean out the filters.”
According to the Park and Rec staff, those issues have been resolved and are open for regular hours.
Crookston Sports Center (CSC) updates were also discussed at the meeting, and the board announced a different weekly schedule for the CSC. As of October 2, the CSC will be open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Recent flooring renovations have been completed at the CSC as well. The main event rink now has complete rubber flooring from the east side of the building to the west side. Solberg described this project as “wherever there was concrete, there is now rubber flooring.” This will allow people to walk around the facility without having to take their skates off.
The consent agenda included approving the minutes from the previous meeting on June 20.
The following Parks and Recreation meeting will be Monday, September 18, at 4:45 p.m. at City Hall.
